Hymn.

Christ our Day-star.

1 WHEN, marshall'd on the mighty plain, The glitt'ring host bestud the sky, One star alone of all the train

[ocr errors]

Can fire the sinner's wond'ring eye.

2 Hark! hark! to GOD the chorus breaks
From ev'ry host, from ev'ry gem;
But one alone the SAVIOUR speaks-
It is the star of Bethlehem.

3 Once on the raging seas I rode,

The storm was loud, the night was dark, The ocean yawn'd, and rudely blow'd The wind that toss'd my found'ring bark.

4 JESUS, my star, my guide, my all,
'Twas Thine to bid my terrors cease;
And through the storm, and danger's thrall,
To lead me to the port of peace.

5 Now safely moor'd, my perils o'er,
This, this shall be my endless theme
For ever and for evermore,
JESUS, the star of Bethlehem!

Hymn.

Christ our Captain and Guide.

1 CAPTAIN of Israel's host, and Guide Of all who seek the land above, Beneath thy shadow we abide,

The cloud of Thy protecting love:

Our strength Thy grace, our rule Thy Word, Our end the glory of the LORD.

N

2 By Thy unerring SPIRIT led,

We shall not in the desert stray;
We shall no other counsel need,
Nor miss our providential way;
As far from danger as from fear,
While love, almighty love, is near.

Hymn.

Christ our only Saviour.

1 JESUS, the spring of joys divine, Whence all our hopes and comfort flow; JESUS, no other Name but Thine

Can save us from eternal woe.

2 In vain would boasting reason find
The
way to happiness and GOD;
Her weak directions leave the mind
Bewilder'd in a dubious road.

3 No other Name will heaven approve :
Thou art the true, the living Way,
(Ordain'd by everlasting Love,)
To the bright realms of endless day.

4 Here let our constant feet abide,

[ocr errors]

Nor from the heavenly path depart; O let Thy SPIRIT, gracious Guide, Direct our steps, and cheer our heart!

5 Safe lead us through this world of night,
And bring us to the blissful plains,
The regions of unclouded light,
Where perfect joy for ever reigns.

Hymn.

Christ our Friend indeed.

1 ONE there is, above all others,
Well deserves the name of Friend;
His is love beyond a brother's,
Costly, free, and knows no end:
They who once His kindness
Find it everlasting love!

prove,

2 Which of all our friends, to save us,
Could or would have shed their blood?
But our JESUS died to have us
Reconcil'd in Him to GOD:
This was boundless love indeed!
JESUS is a Friend in need.

3 When He lived on earth abased,
Friend of sinners was His Name;
Now, above all glory raised,
He rejoices in the same:
Still He calls them brethren, friends,
And to all their wants attends.

4 Could we bear from one another
What He daily bears from us?
Yet this glorious Friend and Brother
Loves us though we treat Him thus:
Though for good we render ill,

He accounts us brethren still.

5 Oh! for grace our hearts to soften!
Teach us, LORD, at length to love:
We, alas! forget too often,

What a Friend we have above:
But when home our souls are brought,
We will love Thee as we ought.

Hymn.

Christ our Friend indeed.

1 POOR, weak, and worthless though I am,
I have a rich almighty Friend ;
JESUS, the SAVIOUR, is His Name,
He freely loves, and without end.

2 He ransom'd me from hell with blood,

And by His power my foes controll'd; He found me wand'ring far from GOD,

And brought me to His chosen fold.

3 He cheers my heart, my wants supplies,
And says that I shall shortly be
Enthron'd with Him above the skies:
O! what a Friend is CHRIST to me!

4 But ah! my inmost spirit mourns,
And well my eyes with tears may swim,
To think of my perverse returns;
I've been a faithless friend to Him.

5 Often my gracious Friend I grieve, Neglect, distrust, and disobey; And often Satan's lies believe,

Sooner than all my Friend can say.

6 Sure were I not thus vile and base,
I could not thus my Friend requite;
And were not He the GOD of grace,
He'd frown and spurn me from His sight,

Hymn.

Christ our Way to the Father.

1 JESUS, my all, to heaven is gone,
He whom I fix my hopes upon;
His track I see, and I'll pursue
The narrow way, till Him I view,

2 The way the holy prophets went,
The road that leads from banishment,
The King's highway of holiness,
I'll go; for all His paths are peace.

3 This is the Way I long have sought,
And mourn'd because I found it not;
My grief my burden long has been,
Because I could not cease from sin.

4 The more I strove against it's power,
I sinn'd and stumbled but the more;
Till late I heard my SAVIOUR say,
Come hither, soul, “I AM THE WAY."

5 Lo! glad I come; and Thou, blest LAMB, Shalt take me to Thee as I am:

My sinful self to Thee I give;
Nothing but love shall I receive.

6 Then will I tell to sinners round
What a dear SAVIOUR I have found;
I'll point to Thy redeeming blood,
And

say, "BEHOLD THE WAY TO GOD!"
