3 Come then, divine INTERPRETER,
The Scriptures to our hearts apply:
Him in three PERSONS magnify;
Which only faithful souls can hear?
Attend the promis'd COMFORTER:
And CHRIST, and all with CHRIST is mine. 2 O that the COMFORTER would come!
Nor visit as a transient guest,
And keep possession of my breast;
The temple of indwelling God!
Attest that I am born again;
Nor let Thy former gifts be vain :
O give the earnest of my heav'n! 4 Grant the indubitable seal
That ascertains the kingdom mine;
The signature of love divine !
. . Hymn.
i THERE is a River, deep and broad;
It's course no mortal knows;
And widens as it flows.
2 Clearer than crystal is the stream,
And bright with endless day;
And life and health convey.
3 Where'er they flow, contentions cease,
And love and meekness reign;
And foes conspire in vain.
4 Along the shores, angelic bands
Watch ev'ry moving wave;
When men the waters crave.
Thither distressed souls repair ;
The LORD invites them nigh:
They drink, and never die.
6 Flow on, sweet Stream, more largely flow,
The earth with gladness fill;
And all obey His will !
1 COME, gracious SPIRIT, heav'nly Dove,
With light and comfort from above;
O'er ev'ry thought and step preside, 2 Conduct us safe, conduct us far,
From ev'ry sin and hurtful snare;
And teach us lessons how to live. 3 The light of truth to us display,
And make us know and choose Thy way; Plant holy fear in ev'ry heart, · That we from God may ne'er depart. 4 Lead us to holiness,--the road
That we must take to dwell with God;
Nor let us from His pastures stray. . . 5 Lead us to GOD, our final rest,
In His enjoyment to be blest;
Lymn. Holy Spirit indwelling and witnessing. 1 COME, Holy Ghost, all-quick’ning fire!
Come, and in me delight to rest; Drawn by the lure of strong desire, .
O come and consecrate my breast!
The temple of my soul prepare,
2 If now Thy influence I feel,
If now in Thee begin to live,
Give me Thyself, for ever give:
3 Eager for Thee I ask and pant,
So strong the principle divine
Till all my hallow'd soul is Thine;
4 My peace, my life, my comfort Thou,
My treasure and my all Thou art!
Engraving pardon on my heart,
5 Come then, my God, mark out Thine heir,
Of heav'n a larger earnest give;
More sensibly within me live:
1 W HY should the children of a king
Go mourning all their days?,, Great COMFORTER! descend, and bring
Some tokens of Thy grace.
2 Dost Thou not dwell in all the saints,
And seal the heirs of heav'n? When wilt Thou banish my complaints,
And show my sins forgiv'n?
3 Assure my conscience of her part
In the REDEEMER's blood;
That I am born of God.
4 Thou art the earnest of His love,
The pledge of joys to come;
Will safe convey me home.
