Organized Feb. 15, 1854. The meetings are held in the City Hall at Bangor on the second Tuesday evening of each month excepting June, July and August.

Androscoggin County Medical Society.

Organized Jan. 1, 1868. Any person in good standing in the medical profession, who is a graduate of a medical school legally qualified to grant diplomas, is eligible to membership.

The annual meeting is held in the City Building at Lewiston on the first Tuesday in January, and meetings for improvement are held on the first Tuesday in each succeeding month of the year.

The annual assessment is one dollar and initiation fee the same.

Cumberland County Medical Society.

Established in 1868. The meetings are held in the rooms of the Portland School for Medical Instruction on the last Wednesday of each month. The annual meeting is held in November.

Maine Homoeopathic Medical Society.

The annual dues are two dollars, payable in advance. All homœopathic physicians in the state are always welcome at the meetings.

York County Medical Association.

Organized, Nov. 11, 1891; chartered, March 14, 1895. Meetings held quarterly the first Thursday of the month. The January and April meetings are held either in Saco or Biddeford (these are practically one city). The July and October meetings, held where determined by vote of society, usually in some other part of county.

Maine Academy of Medicine and Science.

Organized in Portland, September, 1900. The meetings at present are held at the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary at Portland, on the second Monday evening in each month from November to April inclusive.

Maine Medical Association.

The objects of the association are mutual professional improvement, cultivation of friendly intercourse between its members, faithful support of regular and honorable practice, and the promotion of medical science.

The preliminary meeting of the association was held at Brunswick, April 28, 1853. The association was incorporated March 13, 1865, and the first annual meeting assembled at Winthrop Hall, Augusta, June 1, 1853.

MEMBERSHIP.

All candidates for admission shall make application in their own handwriting, upon a blank furnished for the purpose, to the chairman of the board of censors, at least thirty days before the date of the annual meeting, and this application must be accompanied by the recommendation of two members.

All candidates shall be required to appear in person and produce their diplomas or satisfactory evidence that they possess one, on or before the first day of the annual meeting.

Every candidate for membership shall be furnished with a copy of the code of ethics, and before being recommended for membership he shall satisfy the board of censors that he has made himself familiar with the teachings of the code, and in the presence of the board shall subscribe to its requirements.

The board of censors will be in session on the first day of the annual meeting for the purpose of receiving candidates.

The standing rule adopted in 1877, respecting applications for active membership, shall be hereafter (1881) applied in all cases of proposal for honorary membership.

The reception of anonymous communications reflecting upon the character of an applicant shall not be deemed a cause for his rejection by the board of censors.

The board, before acting thereon, shall require all communications from known sources to be duly authenticated and proved to be true beyond a doubt: and to this end the sponsors shall be duly notified of the reception of such communications, and ample opportunity afforded the applicant, either in person or by his sponsors, to appear before the board in his own defense.

The names and residences of all candidates for membership shall be forwarded by the secretary to each member two weeks before the first day of the annual meeting.

In case any applicant for membership, who has received the favorable vote of the association, shall fail to fully qualify before or during the next following session of the association, his election shall be null and void.

Meetings are held on the first Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of June, usually in PortAt the meeting held in June, 1903, the association celebrated its semi-centenary, and two of the charter members, Dr. Alonzo Garcelon of Lewiston and Dr. Cyrus Kindrick of Litchfield, were present.

The association publishes its transactions yearly.

There are at present 483 members.

The course of instruction is a thorough one in all branches by demonstrations and lectures. The nursing of the hospital includes both general and obstetric nursing. Applications for admission must be made in writing to the superintendent, Miss Helen F. Paine.

Central Maine General Hospital.
Lewiston, Maine.

The first class was graduated in 1893. The course of instruction includes twentyseven months. Pupils are received at any time that there is a vacancy; applications for admission should be addressed to the Superintendent of Nurses, Eugenia D. Ayers. The allowance for nurses is $7 a month for the first eight months, $8 a month for the next six months, and $12 a month for the second year.
