An Addition of Two PRAYERS to be faid in private, by Perfons afflicted with great Melancholy.

Moft blessed, and gracious God, who only canst heal a wounded Spirit, and quiet a troubled Mind, look with pity on the Mifery of thy most unworth Creature, that Load of Mifery, and Oppreflion, which I feel within me, but am not able to exprefs. Unto Thee do I cry tor Help, O Thou great Physician of Body and Soul! Uphold, and comfort my weak, and dejected Spirit, ftrengthen it against all inordinate vain Fears, and Terrors, and deliver me from all thofe unprofitable Troubles of Mind, and Scruples ofConfcience, with which I am fo tormented, and oppreffed. As Thou alone canft relieve me, fo unto Thee do I now call for relief; O hear my most earnest Supplication, and make me to possess an eafie, quiet, and chearful Spirit, as my truft is in Thee. 1 ask this, O Lord, as the greatest of bleffings thou canst befto w upon me, but the pardon of my Sins ; I ask it, because I cannot enjoy any other of thy bleffings without it; I ask it because Thou aJone canft give it, and if thou art pleased to

glorify thy Goodness in granting this my mft earnest Request, then shall I ferve Thee faithfully, with a chearful and most thankful Heart, and glorify thy goodness, all the remainder of my Life, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

Bleffed Jefus, who waft made Man, and

who in our Nature tookeft our Infirmities, and was once exceeding forrowful unto Death, and who in anguish of Spirit upon the Crofs, cryed'ft out to thy Father, and our Father, My God, my God, why haft thon forfaken me! O thou most merciful, faithful, and unchangeable High Priest, who waft made like unto thy Brethren, and canst not but be touched with the Sense of our Infirmities, I beseech thee by thy infinite Compaffion, and for thy infinite Merits, to look down from Heaven with an Eye of Pity upon me, who am a miserable Object of thy Pity, being fore afflicted, and fore let, and hindred in the Courfe of my Chriftian Duties by unaccountable Sadnefs, and Dejections of Spirit, which I am not able to prevent, or refift. Thou knoweft, O Lord, how often, and how exceedingly my Soul is troubled, and caft down, thou feeft how much it is difquieted within me, and how grievous it is to me to be thus oppreffed, and how uneafie my Distemper makes me to my self, and others. I take no Delight in any thing I do, no not in my Spiritual Exercises,

which once were, and still should be most delightful to me. Eafie Things are become Difficult, and difficult Things feem impofible to me, and I am full of Fears, Jealoufies, and Sufpitions, but most of all am I apt to Fear in this fad Condition, that I have loft thy Favour. I am wholly indifpofed for my own Bufinefs, and loath to do any thing, even to pray unto Thee, tho' I will not forbear to pray unto Thee, O Lord my Strength, and my Redeemer. I befeech Thee, bleffed Saviour, hear my Complaint, and take away this Plague from me. It is with this moft earneft Petition that I now lie proftrate at the Throne of Mercy. Remove it, I beseech thee, be it fixed in the Body, or in the Soul, of thy afflicted Servant, or in both, fpeak but the Word, and I fhall be whole. I ask this in Submiffion to thy good Will and Pleasure; If it is fent to me to punish me for my Sins paft, or reftrain me from Sins to come, or to make me humble, or exercife my patience, and truft in Thee, not my will, but thine be done. I am content to bear it unto my Life's End, though it is one of the heaviest of Judgments, if thou fhalt think fit to continue it, and fupport me under it with the Affiftances of thy Holy Spirit. But if I am fit for fo great a Mercy, O let this torment of Soul depart from me, that being restored to an eafie, free, cheerful, and active frame of Spirit, I may ferve

Thee

Thee with more Delight, and Vigour, in all
the Duties of my Heavenly Calling, and en-
joy all other Bleflings, and Comforts of
Life, which thou art pleased to continue
unto me, and better bear any other fuffer-
ings which thou shalt think fit, for the ex-
ercife of my patience, at any time to lay up-
on me. O Lord hear this Prayer, which in
anguifh of Spirit I make unto Thee. I come
to Thee at this time in Hopes to obtain this
great Mercy of Thee, who art all Mercy.
O grant it for thy own Merits fake, who
was a Man of Sorrows, and acquainted
with Grief, and now liveft, and reigneft
with the Father, and the Holy Ghost one
God World without End. Amen.
