tude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first, after the troubling of the water, stepped in, was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, He saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole ? The impotent man answered Him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

And immediately the

man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked.' -JOHN V.

ND when even was now come, His disciples went down unto the sea, and entered into a ship, and

went over the sea towards Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose, by reason of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But He saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid.' (In the fourteenth chapter of St. Matthew we also read that 'Peter walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord save me! And immediately Jesus stretched forth His hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?')-JOHN vi.

Now

OW a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. Therefore his sisters sent unto Him [Jesus], saying, Lord, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard that, He said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When He had heard therefore that he was sick, He abode two days still in the same place where He was. After that He saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth. Then said His disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Then said Jesus plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes; nevertheless, let us go unto him. Then, when Jesus came, He found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up

CHRIST TEACHETH HUMILITY.

293.

His eyes, and said, Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me. And I knew that Thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that Thou hast sent me. And when He had thus spoken, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.'-JOHN xi.

CHRIST WASHETH HIS DISCIPLES' FEET. ERE is a lesson, wholesome, indeed, and necessary to our proud nature. How few of us there are but will hesitate to perform an act of kindness and mercy, if we think there is anything menial in it, or that will lower us to the gospel standard of humility in the eyes of those around us! Have we, then, more dignity to

be careful for than the Son of God; and do we always take heed to do nothing more really degrading than washing the feet of a beggar? 'Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside His garments; and took a towel, and girded Himself. After that He poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded. Then cometh He to Simon Peter and Peter said unto Him, Lord, dost Thou wash my feet? Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Peter saith, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. Jesus saith unto him, He that is washed needeth not, save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit and ye are clean, but not all. For He knew who should betray Him.'-JOHN xiii.
