THE SECOND EDITION.

THE FAVOURABLE RECEPTION which the first edition of this work has met with both in the United Kingdom and in the United States, has necessitated, within twelve months, the preparation of the present edition, which embodies the results of a careful revision. Profiting by the suggestions thrown out by the Rev. R. H. QUICK and other educational authorities who have done me the honour to criticise the book, I have made many alterations and additions, which I trust will be regarded as improvements. My thanks are specially due to the Rev. E. F. M. MACCARTHY, M.A., Miss SUSAN WOOD, B.Sc., the Rev. Dr. MOULTON, and Mr. A. H. GRANT, M.A., for valuable hints which have been of great help to me in revising the work.
