In a standard work on surgical practice, published four years ago, the removal of the tongue is condemned in the following terms:"The result of ablation of the entire tongue may easily be imagined. So cruel a procedure could hardly have any other than a fatal termination; death occurring, if not from shock and hemorrhage, from œdema of the glottis, pneumonia, erysipelas, or pyemia. As to any ultimate or even temporary good it might produce it is difficult to perceive it.
