Of the Time of the End.

Aving now fully Explained the 7th Verfe of the XII Chapter of Daniel, which determines the firft Period, I go on to what introduces the second..

"And I heard, but I underffood' not; then faid F, O My Lord, what shall be the End of thefe Things

There was no probability that Daniel fhould Understand a Description that belonged to the Romans, a Nation then not known in Afia, and to the last Scene of their Power, which was not to begin, till almost a Thousand Years after the Time of this Prophecy.

And in this Uncertainty, it was natural to enquire, if there was any thing more to happen after what he had heard?

"And he faid, go thy way Daniel, for the "Words are Clofed up and Sealed, till the "Time of the End.

By this answer of the Angels, Daniel was Commanded to rest satisfied without Enquiring more particularly about the meaning of what he had heard, becaufe the Accomplishment, that alone, was able to explain it fully, would not be till that Time fhould come which is called, the Time of the End, and that therefore according to the Nature of Prophecy, as explained by St. Peter, That it was not its own Interpreter, he was to be contented to let it remain Clofed up and Sealed till it fhould be explained by degrees,

when the Seals should be Opened first in Heaven, by the Lamb, in St. John's Vifion, and then upon 9, 2. Earth, as the feveral parts of St. John's Vifion VII. 1. fhould come to pass, in order of time, one after another: and it will be found, that in the laft or Seventh Seal were contained the Events that relate to this Time of the End: for then, and not till then, did that Power commence, who was to scatter the Power of the Holy People for a Time, Dan XII, Times and a Half, and was to take away the daily 7, 11. Sacrifice, which may be made appear by obferving, that the Angel did, at the begining of this Seventh Seal, take the Cenfer and fill it with Fire of the Altar, and caft it into the Earth, which I fhall, in its proper place, prove to be a defcription of the fame thing with Scattering the Power of the Holy People, and Taking away the daily Sacrifice. But I must first examine this Expreffion, Time of the End; Time is not here in the Original expreffed by the fame word that is ufed for Time where we find, Time, Times and a Half, or, Time, Times and a Dividing of Time, and in thefe laft places the Original Word fignifics a

Fixed Time, or an Appointed Time, and is found, by what I have already fhewn, to be a Tear, which is a certain, Fixed or Limited Time: But in the firft cafe, Time is expreffed by a different Hebrew Word, which fignifies Time in General, or Duration, and therefore of the End is added to determine what that Time was; and this is expreffed by the fame Word in the Original, and on the fame Subject, where, juft before, in a warn ing of those things that are to be Shut up and Dan.XII Sealed, even to the Time of the End, what is moft Remarkable, is, that

The fame Time of Trouble is thus mentioned by Jeremiah,

"Alas! for that day is great, fo that none is Jer.xx«like it, it is even the Time of Jacob's Trouble,

This Time of Trouble, fo that none is like it,

And in St. Luke, ----"The Days of Vengeance, Luke "that all things which are written may be full- XXI. 22: ❝ filled.

----❝In thofe Days there fhall be great Diftrefs ❝ in the Land, and Wrath upon this People.

"And they fhall fall by the Edge of the Sword, "and shall be led away Captives into all Nations, "and Jerufalem shall be Trodden down of the "Gentiles, until the Times of the Gentiles be "fullfilled."

And if we would know what are thefe Times of the Gentiles, St. John informs us, when he says,
