How can this be faid with any Propriety of the old Jews, who after their Return from their firft Captivity in Old Babylon, Rejected the Meffiah, and were again deftroyed and difperfed for their Sins? Nor is their fecond Difperfion over to this Day; fo that the destruction of Babylon, meant here by Jeremiah, can be no other than the Destruction of the fame Babylon, which St. John Prophecies of, and which is yet to be expected.

I have now explained the firft Characters of the little Horn, in the VII of Daniel, that he fhould rife after the Ten Kings, and be divers from the first Ten, and should fubdue three Kings: And fhewn what other Paffages may ferve to Illuftrate and Confirm these first Characters.

Of the Firft Period.

Go on now to the other parts of his Defcription, which ferve to fix the Time of his Beginning.

"And he fhall fpeak great Words against the VI.25. Moft High, and fhall wear cut the Saints of

"the Moft High, and think to change Times "and Laws, and they fhall be given into his "Hand, untill a Time, Times and the Dividing "of Time.

The Continuation of the Defcription which I have not yet mentioned in the next Chapter, where Gabriel interprets, is to the fame effect;

"And his Power fhall be mighty, but not by "his own Power, and he fhall deftroy Wonder"fully, and shall profper and practise, and shall "deftroy the Mighty and the Holy People.

"And through his Policy also, he shall cause "Craft to profper in his Hand, and he fhall "magnify

magnify himself in his Heart, and by Peace "(or Profperity) fhall destroy many.

And to this agrees the fhort Expreffion in the XII Chapter, which I have made cipal Business to explain in this Essay,

"And he opened his Mouth in Blafphemy "against God, to blafpheme his Name, and his "Tabernacle, and them that dwell in Heaven.

"And it was given unto him to make War with the Saints, and to Overcome them, and "Power was given him over all Kindreds, and Tongues, and Nations.

And afterwards, where the fame Power is Rev. xiii reprefented, as coming out of the Earth with two Horns like a Lamb, but fpeaking as a Dragon.. It is thus continued,

All thefe Paffages compared with one another, give fo full and plain an Account of the Popes of Rome, from first to laff, that a very moderate Knowledge of Hiftory ferves to fatisfie us, that they are meant of them, and cannot be applyed to any other.
