Restraining prayer, we cease to fight; While Moses stood with arms spread wide, Have you no words ? ah! think again, Were half the breath that’s vainly spent, song would oftener be, “ Hear what the Lord has done for me.” CXXVIII. LORD, when we bend before Thy throne, And our confessions pour ; Teach us to feel the sins we own, And shun what we deplore. N Our contrite spirits pitying see, And penitence impart; Beam hope upon the heart. When our responsive tongues essay Their grateful songs to raise; Grant that our souls may join the lay, And rise to Thee in praise. When we disclose our wants in prayer, May we our wills resign; Which is not wholly Thine. CXXIX. Far from the world, O Lord, I flee, From strife and tumult far; His most successful war. The calm retreat, the silent shade, With prayer and praise agree; And seem, by thy sweet bounty made, For those who follow Thee. There, if thy Spirit touch the soul, grace her mean abode, Oh, with what peace, and joy, and love, She communes with her God! There, like the nightingale, she pours Her solitary lays; Nor thirsts for human praise. Author and Guardian of my life, Thou source of light divine, My Saviour, Thou art mine! |
