HOW

Our sin, how deep it stains! And Satan binds our captive minds Fast in his slavish chains.

2 But there's a voice of sovereign grace Sounds from the sacred word; Ho! ye despairing sinners, come, And trust upon the Lord. 3 My soul obeys th' Almighty call, And runs to this relief;

I would believe thy promise, Lord, O help mine unbelief. 4[To the dear fountain of thy blood, Incarnate God, I fly;

Here let me wash my spotted soul
From crimes of deepest dye.
5 Stretch out thine arm, victorious King,
My reigning sins subdue;
Drive the old dragon from his seat,
With all his hellish crew.]

6 A guilty, weak, and helpless worm,
On thy kind arms I fall;
Be thou my strength and righteousness,
My Jesus, and my all!

"Nor bullocks burnt with fire; "To hope and love, to pray and praise, "Is all that I require.

PSALM 16. 1st Part. L. M. b 239} Carthage, Putney. Confession of our poverty, and saints the best company; or, good works profit men, not God. PRESERVE me, Lord, in time of need; For succour to thy throne I flee, But have no merits there to plead; My goodness cannot reach to thee. 2 Oft have my heart and tongue confess'd How empty and how poor I am; My praise can never make thee bless'd, Nor add new glories to thy name. 3 Yet, Lord, thy saints on earth may reap Some profit by the good we do; These are the company I keep, These are the choicest friends I know. 4 Let others choose the sons of mirth To give a relish to their wine; I love the men of heavenly birth, Whose thoughts and language are divine.

HYMN 115. B. 1. C. M. or b St. David, St. Asaph. Conviction of sin by the law.

"Measure and rule thy love to him."LORD,how secure my conscience was,

3 This is the sense that Moses spoke,
This did the prophets preach and prove;
For want of this the law is broke,
And the whole law's fulfill'd by love.
4 But O! how base our passions are;
How cold our charity and zeal;
Lord, fill our souls with heavenly fire,
Or we shall ne'er perform thy will.

Gloucester, All Saints.

The law and gospel distinguished. 1THE HE law commands, and makes us know

What duties to our God we owe; But 'tis the gospel must reveal Where lies our strength to do his will. 2 The law discovers guilt and sin, And shews how vile our hearts have Only the gospel can express. [been; Forgiving love, and cleansing grace. 3 What curses doth the law denounce Against the man that fails but once! But in the gospel Christ appears, Pard'ning the guilt of numerous years. 4 My soul, no more attempt to draw Thy life and comfort from the law; Fly to the hope the gospel gives; The man that trusts the promise lives.

GOSPEL.

PSALM 89. 3d Part. C. M. Exeter, Pembroke.

A blessel gospel.

1DLEST are the souls that hear and The gospel's joyful sound; [know Peace shall attend the paths they go, And light their steps surround.

2 Their joy shall bear their spirits up, Through their Redeemer's name; His righteousness exalts their hope, Nor Satan dares condemn.

3 The Lord, our glory and defence, Strength and salvation gives: Israel, thy King forever reigns, Thy God forever lives.

O, preach my gospel," saith the Lord; "Bid the whole earth my grace receive: "He shall be sav'd that trusts my word; "He shall be damn'd that wont believe

2[I'll make your great commission known,

"And ye shall prove my gospel true, "By all the works that I have done, "By all the wonders ye shall do. 3" Go heal the sick, go raise the dead, "Go cast out devils in my name; "Nor let my prophets be afraid, "Though Greeks reproach, and Jews blaspheme.]

4"Teach all the nations my commands; "I'm with you till the world shall end! "All power is trusted in my hands; "I can destroy, and I defend."

He spake, and light shone round his head;

On a bright cloud to heaven he rode; They to the farthest nations spread The grace of their ascended God.

The excellency of the Christian religion

ET everlasting glories crown Lord; Thy hands have brought salvation down, And writ the blessings in thy werd.

What if we trace, the globe around, And search from Britain to Japan, There shall be no religion found So just to God, so safe for man.] In vain thé trembling conscience seeks Some solid ground to rest upon; With long despair the spirit breaks, Till we apply to Christ alone.

How well thy blessed truths agree! How wise and holy thy commands! Thy promises, how firm they be! How firm our hope and comfort stands! [Not the feign'd fields of heath'nish bliss Could raise such pleasures in the mind ; Nor does the Turkish paradise Pretend to joys so well refin’d.] Should all the forms that men devise

Assault my faith with treacherous art, 'd call them vanity and lies, And bind the gospel to my heart.

theme;

The mysteries that we speak Are scandal in the Jews' esteem, And folly to the Greek.

2 But souls enlighten'd from above, With joy receive the word; They see what wisdom, power `and Shine in their dying Lord. [love 3 The vital savour of his name

Restores their fainting breath; But unbelief perverts the same

To guilt, despair and death. 4 Till God diffuse his graces down, Like showers of heavenly rain, In vain Apollos sows the ground, And Paul may plant in vain.

HYMN 138., B. 2. L. M. X
Rothwell, Eaton.

The power of the gospel.
THIS is the word of truth and love,

Sent to the nations from above;
Jehovah here resolves to shew
What his almighty grace can do.

2 This remedy did wisdom find,
To heal diseases of the mind;
This sovereign balm, whose virtues can
Restore the ruin'd creature, man.

3 The gospel bids the dead revive; Sinners obey the voice, and live; Dry bones are rais'd, and cloth'd afresh;

And hearts of stone are turn'd to flesh. 4 [Where Satan reign'd in shades of night, The gospel strikes a heavenly light; Our lusts its wondrous power controls, And calms the rage of angry souls. 5 Lions and beasts of savage name Put on the nature of the lamb; While the wide world esteem it strange, Gaze, and admire, and hate the change.] 6 May but this grace my soul renew, Let sinners gaze, and hate me too; The word that saves me does engage A sure defence from all their rage.

God glorified in the gospel. 1 THE Lord, descending from above,

Invites his children near; While power, and truth,and boundless Display their glories here. [love 2Here, in thy gospel's wondrous frame,

Fresh wisdom we pursue; A thousand angels learn thy name, Beyond whate'er they knew.

3 Thy name is writ in fairest lines,
Thy wonders here we trace;
Wisdom thro' all the mystery shines,
And shines in Jesus' face.

4 The law its best obedience owes
To our incarnate God;
And thine avenging justice shows
Its honours in his blood.

5 But still the lustre of thy grace
Our warmer thoughts employs,
Gilds the whole scene with brighter rays,
And more exalts our joys.

WOW beauteous are their feet, HOW Who stand on Zion's hill! Who bring salvation on their tongues, And words of peace reveal. 2 How charming is their voice! How sweet the tidings are,! "Zion, behold thy Saviour King, "He reigns and triumphs here." 3 How happy are our ears,

That hear this joyful sound, Which kings and prophets waited for, And sought, but never found! 4 How blessed are our eves,

That see this heavenly light; Prophets and kings desired it long, But died without the sight! 5 The watchmen join their voice, And tuneful notes employ; Jerusalem breaks forth in songs, And deserts learn the joy.

6 The Lord makes bare his arm Through all the earth abroad; Let every nation now behold

Their Saviour and their God.

"Ho! all ye hungry, starving souls, "That feed upon the wind,

"And vainly strive with earthly toys "To fill an empty mind: "Eternal Wisdom has prepar'd "A soul-reviving feast, "And bids your longing appetites "The rich provision taste. 4"Ho! ye that pant for living streams, "And pine away, and die; "Here you may quench your ragingthirst "With springs that never dry. 5" Rivers of love and mercy here

"In a rich ocean join; "Salvation in abundance flows,

"Like floods of milk and wine.

6" [Ye perishing and naked poor,

Who work with mighty pain "To weave a garment of your own, "That will not hide your sin; 7"Come naked, and adorn your souls "In robes prepar'd by God, "Wrought by the labours of his Son, "And dy'd in his own blood."]

8 Dear God! the treasures of thy love
Are everlasting mines,
Deep as our helpless miseries are,
And boundless as our sins!

Stand open night and day:
Lord, we are come to seek supplies,
And drive our wants away.

Resign our spirits to thy hand,
To mould and guide us at thy will.

Limehouse, Putney,

The fall and recovery of man; or,
"Christ and Satan at enmity.

1Ddam our head, our father, fell! ECEIV'D by subtle snares of hell,

When Satan, in the serpent lid, Propos'd the fruit that God forbid. 2 Death was the threatening: death began To take possession of the man; His unborn race receiv'd the wound, And heavy curses smote the ground. 3 But Satan found a worse reward; Thus saith the vengeance of the Lord, "Let everlasting hatred be

"Betwixt the woman's seed and thee. 4" The woman's seed shall be my Son; "He shall destroy what thou hast done;

Shall break thy head, and only feel "Thy malice raging at his heel." 5 [He spake and bid four thousand years Roll on;-at length his Son appears; Angels with joy descend to earth And sing the young Redeemer's birth.
