ON THIS FESTIVAL WE CELEBRATE OUR SAVIOUR'S RESURRECTION FROM THE Dead.

(Appropriate Psalms.)

[35 Part ii. 118 Part iv.]
84 L. M.

Sufferings and triumph of Christ.
1 HE dies, the Friend of sinners dies!
Lo! Salem's daughters weep around;
A solemn darkness veils the skies;
A sudden trembling shakes the ground.
2 Trace, sons of men, in sad review,
His grief, who bow'd beneath your load;
Who freely gave his life for you,

The ransom of your souls to God.

3 Yet cease your tears ye saints, and tell
How high your great Deliv'rer reigns;
Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led his captive, Death, in chains.

4 Say

Live for ever, wondrous King, "Born to redeem, and strong to save:" Then ask, "O Death, where is thy sting? "And where thy victory, O Grave?"

[blocks in formation]

Christ's Resurrection.

10 JOYFUL sound! O glorious hour!
When Christ, by his almighty power,
Arose and left the grave:
Now let our songs his triumph tell,
Who broke the chains of death and hell,
And ever lives to save.

2"The first-begotten from the dead,"
Behold him rise, his people's head,
Immortal life to bring:

What! tho' the saints like him shall die,
They share their leader's victory,
And triumph with their king.

3 No more we tremble at the grave,
For he who died our souls to save,
Will raise our bodies too.

What! tho' this earthly house shall fail
The Saviour's power will yet prevail,
And build it up anew.

86 P. M.

Resurrection of Christ.

YES, the Redeemer rose,
The Saviour left the dead;

And o'er our cruel foes,

High raised his conqu'ring head
In wild dismay,

The guards around,
Fell to the ground
And sunk away.

Lo! the angelic bands

In full assembly meet,

To wait his high commands,

And worship at his feet;

Joyful they come,
And wing their way
From realms of day,
To view the tomb.

Then back to heaven they fly,
These tidings to declare ;
Hark! as they soar on high,

What music fills the air!

Their anthems say,
Jesus who bled,
Hath left the dead,
He rose to-day.

Ye mortals catch the sound,
Redeem'd by him from hell;
And send the echo round

The globe on which you dwell.
Transported cry,

Jesus who bled
Hath left the dead,
No more to die.

L. M.

Rejoicing in Christ's resurrection.

1 I KNOW that my Redeemer lives;
Oh the sweet joy this sentence gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives, my everlasting Head.

2 He lives, my kind, wise, constant friend
Who still will keep me to the end;
He lives, and while he lives I'll sing,
Jesus, my Prophet, Priest, and King.

3 He lives that he may in me dwell,
And save me from the power of hell;
To comfort me whene'er I faint,
And soothe my bitterest complaint.

4 He lives my mansion to prepare,
And he will bring me safely there;
He lives, all glory to his name,
Jesus, unchangeably the same.

[blocks in formation]

Hope by the Resurrection of Christ. 1 YE humble souls that seek the Lord, Chase all your fears away,

And bow with pleasure down to see
The place where Jesus lay.

2 Thus low the Lord of life was brought, Such wonders love can do ;

Thus cold in death that bosom lay,
Which throbb'd and bled for you.

3 Then raise your eyes and tune your songs The Saviour lives again;

Not all the bolts and bars of death
The conqu'ror could detain.

4 High o'er th' angelic bands he rears
His once dishonour'd head;
And thro' unnumber'd years he reigns,
Who dwelt among the dead.

5 With joy like his shall every saint,
His empty tomb survey;

1

2

Then rise with his ascending Lord,
Through all his shining way.

[blocks in formation]

The Resurrection of Christ. "THE Lord is ris'n indeed," And are the tidings true?

Yes, we beheld the Saviour bleed,

And saw him living too.

"The Lord is ris'n indeed,"
Then justice asks no more;

Mercy and truth are now agreed,
Who stood oppos'd before.

4

5

"The Lord is ris'n indeed,"

Then death has lost his prey;

With Christ has ris'n the ransom'd seed, To reign in endless day.

"The Lord is ris'n indeed,"

He lives to die no more;

He lives the sinner's cause to plead,

Whose curse and shame he bore.

Then take your golden lyres, Strike every cheerful chord; Join all the bright celestial choirs, To sing our ris'n Lord.

[blocks in formation]

Resurrection of Christ.

I CHRIST, the Lord, is ris'n to-day,
Our triumphant holy-day;
He endur'd the cross and grave,
Sinners to redeem and save.

2 Lo! He rises, mighty king,

Where, O death! is now thy sting?
Lo! He claims his native sky;
Grave, where is thy victory?

3 Sinners, see your ransom paid,
Peace with God for ever made;
With your risen Saviour rise,
Claim your mansion in the skies.

4 Christ, the Lord, is ris'n to-day,
Our triumphant holy-day :
Loud the song of victory raise ;
Shout the great Redeemer's praise.
