PRE FACE.

Gentle Reader!

Thou art here presented with one moiety of a precious poetical morceau from the

departed uncle, ZACHARY GooseQUILL, deceased. I discovered the work at the bottom of a chest of his invaluable MSS. which he bequeathed to me by codicil to his will; and forthwith took measures to make thee also a partaker of that pleasure which I myself had experienced from its perusal. A Pindaric Ode, addressed to the gallant Sir H. D. and his Coadjutors on the late glorious Convention of Cintra.

An heroic Epistle to the Lord Mayor, Sheriffs, Aldermen, and Common Council of London, on their cordial and encouraging Reception at St. James's.

Cock-a-doodle-do, a Poem, on the Result of a military Enquiry to take place in the Year of our Lord 1999.

The Party of Pleasure; or Junot’s Return to France; a Farce never before acted.

[merged small][ocr errors]

Belgic Laurels; a poetical Epinikeon, inscribed to his R. H. the D. of Y

National Faith, a mock-heroic; written in the Danish Language; with a Frontispiece representing Copenhagen in Flames.

Catholic Emancipation, a Tragi-comedy, addressed to the Irish Nation, but never intended to be per formed.

The Bed of Roses, a popular Romance; written by Lord C-h.

The Deserter, or the Secret of feathering a Nest; a true Story, by Master C-n-g

The Loves of the Treasury; or the political Swindlers, a humorous Tale, by old G- R—

When the above are disposed of, I will then, gentle Reader, sit down“ doggedly,” as the great English lexicographer would have expressed himself, to the completion and publication of the remaining moiety of my uncle's poem, which (barring accidents) I think I may venture to promise thee on or before the first of
