The following Catalogue is arranged alphabetically according to the Authors' names, with cross references where necessary. regard to books published anonymously or pseudonymously several rules have been generally observed. I.-Books will be found catalogued under the Author's real name in cases where it is known, with cross reference from the pseudonym. II. In cases where the names of Authors of anonymous books are not known the books will be found 1.—Under the name of a person if the book refers to a person. 2.Under the name of a place if it refers to a place. 3.-Under the catchword of the title if neither of the foregoing rules applies. Reviews and Magazines will be found under their proper names. Transactions and Publications of Societies under the names of the Societies. It was intended to add to the catalogue an index of subjects, but the labour of compiling one is so great that for the present its postponement is inevitable. The Committee has the power to determine that certain books shall not circulate. This power is only exercised, I. Where the books are purely reference books, such as Encyclopedias, Dictionaries, Peerages, Atlases, and the like. II.-Where the books are scarce and valuable, such as the County Histories of Nichols, and Baker; also, costly illustrated books, such as Stothard's Monumental Effigies and Jones's Grammar of Ornament. These books have no distinguishing mark in the Catalogue.
