4 Think, O my soul, the dreadful day,
When this incensed God,
Shall rend the sky, and burn the sea,
And fling his wrath abroad.

5 What shall the wretch, the sinner do?
He once defy'd the Lord;
But he shall dread the thunderer now,
And sink beneath his word.

6 Tempests of angry fire shall roll,
To blast the rebel-worm,

And beat upon his naked soul,
In one eternal storm.

294. The final Sentence, and Misery of the Wicked.

1

A

Matt. xxv. 41. (S. M.)

ND will the Judge descend?
And must the dead arise ?

And not a single soul escape,
His all-discerning eyes?

2 And from his righteous lips,
Shall such a sentence sound?
And, through the millions of the lost,
Spread black despair around?

3

"Depart from me accurs'd,
"To everlasting flame, -
" For rebel angels first prepar'd,

:

"Where mercy never came."

How will my heart endure,

4

The terrors of that day,

When earth and heaven, before his face,

Astonish'd shrink away?

5 But ere the trumpet shakes
The mansions of the dead,
Hark, from the gospel's gentle voice,
What joyful tidings spread!

6 Ye sinners, seek his grace,
Whose wrath ye cannot bear ;
Fly to the shelter of his cross,
And find salvation there.

7

So shall that curse remove,
By which the Saviour bled;
And the last awful day shall pour,
His blessings on your head.

295. The Second Advent. (L. M.)

1

HE E comes! he comes! the Judge severe !
The seventh trumpet speaks him near :

His light'nings flash, his thunders roll,
He's welcome to the faithful soul!

2 From heav'n angelic voices sound,
See the Almighty Jesus crown'd!
Girt with omnipotence and grace,
And glory decks the Saviour's face!

3 Descending on his azure throne,
He claims the kingdoms for his own :
The kingdoms all obey his word,
And hail him their triumphant Lord!

4 Shout all the people of the sky,
And all the saints of the Most High!
Our Lord who now his right maintains,
For ever and for ever reigns.

L

The same. (P. M.)

O! He comes
Once for favour'd sinners slain!

with clouds descending,

Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of his train :

Hallelujah!

Hallelujah! Amen!

2 Ev'ry eye shall now behold him,
Rob'd in dreadful majesty;
Those who set at nought and sold him,
Pierc'd and nail'd him to the tree;

Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

3 Ev'ry island, sea, and mountain,
Heav'n and earth shall flee away;
All who hate him, must, confounded,
Hear the trump proclaim the day;
Come to judgment!

Come to judgment! come away!.

4 Now redemption long expected,
See! in solemn pomp appear!
All his saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet him in the air!
Hallelujah!

See the day of God appear!

5 Answer thine own bride and spirit,
Hasten, Lord, the gen'ral doom!
The new heav'n and earth t' inherit,
Take thy pining exiles home;
All creation,

Travails! groans! and bids thee come!

6 Yea! Amen! Let all adore thee,
High on thine eternal throne!
Saviour, take the pow'r and glory;
Claim the kingdom for thine own!
O come quickly!

Hallelujah! Come, Lord, come!

297. Death swallowed up in Victory. (P.M.)

1.

WE sing his love who once was slain,

Who soon o'er death reviv'd again; That all his saints through him might have, Eternal conquest o'er the grave.

CHORUS.

Soon shall the trumpet sound, and we
Shall rise to immortality.

2 The saints who now in Jesus sleep,
His own almighty pow'r shall keep,
Till dawns the bright illustrious day,
When death itself shall die away.

3 How loud shall our gład voices sing,
When Christ his risen saints shall bring,
From beds of dust, and silent clay,
To realms of everlasting day.

4 When Jesus we in glory meet,
Our utmost joys shall be complete :
When landed on that heav'nly shore,
Death and the curse shall be no more.

5 Hasten, dear Lord, the glorious day,
And this delightful scene display;
When all thy saints from death shall rise,
Raptur'd in bliss beyond the skies.

298. The Day of Judgment. (P.M.)

1 DAY of judgment, day of wonders!

Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,

Louder than ten thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round!

How the summons, will the sinner's heart confound!

2 See the Judge our nature wearing, Cloth'd in majesty divine!

You who long for his appearing, Then shall say, "This God is mine!" Gracious Saviour, own me in that day for thine!

3 At his call the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the pow'rs of nature shaken,
By his looks, prepare to flee:

Careless sinner, what will then become of thee!

4 Horrors past imagination,

Will surprise your trembling heart,
When you hear your condemnation,
Hence, accursed wretch, depart!

[ocr errors]

Thou, with Satan and his angels, have thy part!"

5 But to those who have confessed,

Lov'd and serv'd the Lord below!

He will say, "Come near, ye blessed,
See the kingdom I bestow:

You for ever, shall my love and glory know."

6 Under sorrows and reproaches,

May this thought your courage raise ! Swiftly God's great day approaches, Sighs shall then be chang'd to praise: We shall triumph, when the world is in a blaze.
