INAUGURAL MESSAGE.

Senators and Gentlemen of the House of Representatives:

It gives me pleasure to congratulate you upon your assembling at the apital for the purpose of discharging your duties to the State.

Michigan can boast of a civilization built upon free labor, free schools, a ree ballot and untrammeled religious opinion. Under this civilization, by the lessing of Providence and by the energy of our people, we have had abundant arvests with increased productions of our mines, our forests and fisheries. he products of 1879, the latest year concerning which the statistical inforation is complete, in farm crops, timber, minerals and fish aggregate 169,500,000 00, made up of the following items:

The progress in agriculture is worthy of your special attention. The numr of farms occupied is 118,941, covering 10,977,105 acres-6,217,209 acres which are improved. These farms average 92.19 acres each.

The various products of these farms and their increase for the past decade shown by the table following:
