OUR friendship began, as you may remember, my dear Sir, while the first efforts were made to establish the Church in a region of the West, where she had been very backward about doing her duty, and where the opposition to be encountered was almost overpowering. The kindly relations which have existed between us for years, and the interest you have shown as vestryman of a parish which, thanks to God's goodness, is no longer small, have induced me to believe that you will not be offended, that this simple record of labors, and discouragements, and mercies, should be dedicated to you, as a token of affectionate regard.
