States. It was the custom for the Newfoundland customs officers to act as sureties on these bonds, notwithstanding the fact that they were financially irresponsible. Each surety made a charge of $5. The customs officers also exacted a small fee for preparing these bonds. I was required to file one of these bonds on this trip. The charge for "culling and measuring tubs" was a charge exacted by government officials of Newfoundland for marking tubs used for the purpose of measuring the amount of the catch of the various members of the crew. These officials insisted that it was illegal to use tubs for this purpose which had not been properly marked by the proper government officials. The payment of $2.50, described as "Health officers' fees," was for a bill of health which I was required to obtain on entering my vessel at Bay of Islands on the above mentioned trip. Attached statement of W. A. Gabriel, Newfoundland Revenue Officer at Lark Harbor, contains a list of articles on which I paid duty on December 6, 1904, upon my arrival at Lark Harbor, Newfoundland, on the second voyage of the Aloha described on Page 1 of this affidavit. The words "All duty paid" written across the list of articles on this statement are in the handwriting of said Gabriel, and were written by him. Attached memorandum of the customs officers of Newfoundland marked "O" is a memorandum given to me on or about December 9, 1910, upon my arrival in Newfoundland on the third voyage described on Page 1 of this affidavit. This memorandum contains a list of the articles on which I paid duty at that time, together with the amount of duty paid on each article. The remarks which I made with respect to the use of the articles on which duty was paid on the first trip of the Aloha, and which are listed on enclosure G, are likewise applicable to the articles listed on enclosure N and enclosure O. Having secured a cargo of herring, said schooner sailed for Gloucester, arriving on the date as set forth in the customshouse records at Gloucester, hereunto annexed. Said vessel brought back to said port of Gloucester on the return trip all the said barrels, salt, nets and other gear, outfit and supplies which she carried away from said port of Gloucester, excepting only such portions of the same as had been consumed, used, lost, destroyed, or, in the case of fishing gear and outfit, had been issued to Newfoundland members of the crew for the prosecution of the fishing operations of the vessel.
