The charter-party is a contract by which an entire ship or some principal part thereof, is let to a merchant, for the conveyance of goods, on a determined voyage to one or more places.

A bill of lading is a formal receipt, signed by the master of the ship, in his capacity of carrier, whereby he acknowledges that he has received the goods specified, on board his ship, and binds himself (under certain conditions), to deliver them, in the condition received, at the place, and to the person named in the bill, or to his assigns, on his or their paying him, the stipulated freight.
