BURSARIES.

Competition Bursaries Vacant.

A competitive Examination for the undermentioned Bursaries will be held on Friday and Saturday, 23d and 24th October:A Berry Bursary, of the annual value of £40, tenable for three years.

A Taylour Thomson Bursary, of the annual value of £30, tenable for three years.

A Foundation Bursary, of the annual value of £24, tenable for three years.

A Taylour Thomson Bursary, of the annual value of £20, tenable for three years.

The Buist Bursary, of the annual value of £20, tenable for three years.

A Beath Bursary, of the annual value of about £18, 10s., ten

able for three years.

Two Alexander Bursaries, of the annual value of £15 each, tenable for three years.

The Yeaman and Stuart Bursary, of the annual value of about £13, tenable for three years.

The New Endowment Association Bursary, value £6, tenable for one year.

Hebrew.-Paradigm of the Regular Verb, and of the Guttural Verb, with suffixes as appended both to verbs and nouns; the large print of the sections explanatory of the above in Gesenius's Grammar, or Davidson's Grammar, sections 1-31. Translation and grammatical analysis of Genesis iii.

Scripture History.—1st and 2d Samuel; the Acts of the Apostles. History of the period between the Old and New Testaments. [Book recommended: From the Exile to the Advent,' by Fairweather. (T. & T. Clark.)]

None of the Entrance Bursaries open to competition shall be held by any successful candidate holding an outside bursary of £20 or more per annum, tenable for three or more years.

No successful candidate shall hold a competition bursary along with any other competition or presentation bursary without the special permission of the College, and such permission will in no case be given when the combined value of the bursaries amounts to £20 or upwards.

PRIZES.

1. GRAY PRIZE.-A prize of about £4, 8s. will be awarded for the best essay on the following subject: "The Origin, Growth, and Close of the Composition of the Hebrew Psalter."

The essays must be given in to the Secretary of the University, with mottoes and sealed notes, not later than 8th January 1897. 2. The CHANCELLOR'S PRIZE of £10, in books, will be awarded after examination on the following subjects :

1. Hooker's Ecclesiastical Polity, Bk. I. (Clarendon Press edition). 2. Duke of Argyll's Unity of Nature. 3. Caird's Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion. 4. History of the Church of Scotland, 1560-1689. 5. Greek-1st Book of Maccabees. 6. Hebrew-Book of the Prophet Amos.

The Examination will take place on the first Friday in December, and all Students who have given attendance during Session 1895-96 may be competitors.

SCHOLARSHIPS.

TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP FOR BIBLE LANDS,
INCLUDING GREECE.

This Scholarship, of the value of £150, will be open for competition on 29th and 30th June 1896 to all Graduates in Arts who have in March or April 1895 or 1896 completed either their second or third session of study in the Divinity Hall of any Scottish University with a view to the ministry of the Church of Scotland. The holder will be required to leave before the end of September for the East, and to spend (1) not less than three months in Greece, devoting there the main part of his attention to the living language of the country, and (2) not less than six months in Syria and Egypt, devoting special attention to the study of Arabic during this period.

The Subjects of Competition will be (1) Greek-Herodotus, Books I. and II., and the Acts of the Apostles; (2) HebrewTranslations from Genesis and Exodus, and 1 and 2 Samuel, and English into Hebrew; (3) Church History-to the Council of Chalcedon, 451 A.D.; (4) Bible Archæology and Egyptian History as in Dr Nicol's Recent Explorations in Bible Lands, and Professor Flinders Petrie's History of Egypt from the Earliest Times to the Sixteenth Dynasty.

BERRY SCHOLARSHIPS.

Two Berry Scholarships in Theology will be open to competition at the close of Session 1896-97. One Scholarship will be attached to the department of Divinity and Church History, and the other to the department of Biblical Criticism and Hebrew. Candidates must have taken their whole course in Divinity at St Mary's College, and must at the date of their appointment have passed all the examinations required for the Degree of B.D. The Scholars must undertake to prosecute their studies in the subjects of their departments at St Andrews, unless special permission be granted by the University Court to study elsewhere; and they may, if remaining in St Andrews, be required to take part in the class-work of their departments. Each Scholarship is of the value of £100, tenable for one year, but the University Court may continue the Scholarships for a second year on the recommendation of the Senatus Academicus. The subjects of examination are the same as those prescribed for the B.D. Degree, but on a higher standard. Candidates must send in their names to Principal Stewart, not later than 1st February 1897. The Scholarships will not be awarded unless Candidates of sufficient merit present themselves.

COOK AND MACFARLAN SCHOLARSHIP.

This Scholarship, of about £21, tenable for one year, will be open for competition at the annual Scholarship Examination at the close of next Session. For subjects of examination see Berry Scholarships. Candidates to give in their names to Principal Stewart on or before the 1st of February 1897.

TULLOCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

This Scholarship, of about £14, tenable for one year, will be open for competition at the annual Scholarship Examination at the close of next Session. For subjects of Examination see Berry Scholarships. Candidates to give in their names on or before the 1st of February 1897.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION.

At a General Meeting of the four Committees appointed under Act IX. of the General Assembly 1874, for the Examination of Students entering the Divinity Halls, the following programme of

books and subjects, on which all Students entering the Divinity Halls for the Session 1896-97-with exception of those who hold the degree of M.A. or departmental certificates pro tanto-will be examined, was unanimously agreed to. Graduates and others above referred to will be examined in New Testament Greek and Hebrew.

LATIN.-Cicero, De Officiis. Virgil, Eneid, Book IV.
GREEK.-Plato, Apologia. The Epistle to the Ephesians,
with Introduction: Cambridge Greek Testament.
HEBREW.-The Grammar-to the Regular Verb, also Pronouns,
including the Pronominal Suffixes. Genesis, Chapter I.
MATHEMATICS.-Euclid, Books I., II., and III. Algebra, up
to and including Quadratic Equations.

NATURAL PHILOSOPHY.-Deschanel's Physics, Part I.
LOGIC.-Jevons's Elementary Lessons in Logic.

MORAL PHILOSOPHY.-Muirhead's Elements of Ethics.

ENGLISH LITERATURE.-Morley's First Sketch. Chapter XI. (1883 edition).
