PREFACE.

THIS CALENDAR is the only authorised Academical Record of general information respecting the University and Colleges of St Andrews. It is published annually, with the necessary alterations, as soon as possible after the close of the Winter Session.

The New Regulations for Graduation in Arts, Science, and Medicine will be found printed in full at pages 57, 77, and 101. The attention of Students who are entering the University for the first time is particularly directed to the Regulations relating to Preliminary Examinations, pp. 41-55.

Students who began their course previous to 1st October 1892 are at liberty to complete it under the Old Regulations. If they prefer to proceed under the New Regulations, they may qualify themselves for doing so by passing the Preliminary Examination, if they have not already passed an equivalent one.

Although various new avenues to the M.A. Degree have been opened up, it will be noticed from the Programmes of Classes that the necessary instruction in several of the alternative subjects has not yet been provided.

Another important change effected by the new Ordinances is that women may now become matriculated students of the University, and may enter upon the various curricula with a view to graduation in Arts, Science, or Medicine. Special Bursaries have been provided for women, but the subjects and days and hours of examination are the same for women as for men. The conditions for graduation are also practically the same.

The Junior Classes in Latin, Greek, and Mathematics do not now qualify for graduation, and it is in the power of the University Court to discontinue them when, in the opinion of the Court,

the provision for secondary education in schools throughout the country is sufficient to render such classes no longer necessary.

While the new Ordinances have made a Preliminary Examination compulsory on all candidates for graduation, the University still retains its ancient freedom of teaching and learning. Its classes are open to all persons, without respect to age or sex, who are seeking instruction in some special branch of knowledge, or who are prevented by circumstances from attempting a full course of academical study. On such it imposes no restrictions, either in the shape of an entrance examination or a prescribed curriculum. The University, however, does not undertake to provide Bursaries for Students who do not pass the Preliminary Examination with the intention of proceeding to a Degree.

The general correspondence of the University is conducted by the Secretary (Mr MAITLAND ANDERSON), to whom all communications should be addressed, except such as specially refer to the Arts curriculum and the examinations for the M.A. Degree. These should be sent to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

The correspondence connected with Degrees in Science and with the L.L.A. Examinations is conducted by the Conveners of the respective Committees.

"Regulations for the encouragement of special study and research, and for the appointment of Research Fellows," and "Regulations for Higher Degrees in Arts and Science," are printed for the first time in the present issue of the Calendar at pages 470 and 472.
