A SEA DIRGE

LL fathom five thy father lies ;

FULL

Of his bones are coral made;

Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade

But doth suffer a sea-change

Into something rich and strange.

Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell.

Ding-dong.

Hark! now I hear them,-Ding-dong, bell.

[blocks in formation]

White his shroud as the mountain snow,

Larded with sweet flowers ;

Which bewept to the grave did go

With true-love showers.

SNATCHES

I

THEY bore him barefaced on the bier;
Hey non nonny, nonny, hey nonny;

And in his grave rain'd many a tear :-
You must sing a-down a-down,

An you call him a-down-a.

And will he not come again?
And will he not come again?
No, no, he is dead :

Go to thy death-bed :

He never will come again.

His beard was as white as snow,

All flaxen was his poll:

He is gone, he is gone,

And we cast away moan:

God ha' mercy on his soul !

II

Come o'er the bourn, Bessy, to me!

-Her boat hath a leak,

And she must not speak

Why she dares not come over to thee!

III

Sleepest or wakest thou, jolly shepherd? Thy sheep be in the corn;

And for one blast of thy minikin mouth, Thy sheep shall take no harm.

THE MISANTHROPE

IMMORTAL gods, I crave no pelf;

I pray for no man but myself: Grant I may never prove so fond, To trust man on his oath or bond; Or a harlot, for her weeping;

Or a dog, that seems a-sleeping;

Or a keeper with my freedom;

Or my friends, if I should need 'em.

Amen. So fall to't :

Rich men sin, and I eat root.
