Summer School of Science, 1882. LAW for the Encouragement of Higher Education. Almanac, 1883-84. CONTENTS.

SUMMER SCHOOL FOR TEACHERS-1882.

Courses of instruction in botany, geography, German and English were opened at the University of Minnesota. July 5th, and continued four weeks. The courses offered were as follow:

I. BOTANY, Mr. J. C, Arthur.

(a.) Morphology of the vegetable cell. (b.) Special structure of plants, considered by classes. (c.) Vegetable histology and physiology. (d.) Bibliography and history of botany. (e.) Laboratory work.

II. GEOLOGY, Professor C. W. Hall.

(a)-An outline of descriptive mineralogy. (b.) The rocks and minerals of Minnesota. (c.) Laboratory work to determine our most common rocks and minerals at sight, or by the application of the simplest chemical and blow-pipe tests.

III. GERMAN, Professor J G. Moore.

A course of twenty lessons in the elements of German, especially adapted to the wants of those intending to teach the language.

IV. ENGLISH, (two hours per week) Professor M. Marston.

Lectures on the history, philology and grammar of the English language.
