HIS painting is deservedly ranked as one of the foremost artistic works of the nineteenth century: a veritable Idyll of Theocritus transferred to canvas. Its title, "Youth," suggests not only the first heart stirrings of human love, but also the primeval Golden Age when this old world itself was young.
