10 He call'd for darkness ; darkness came Like an o'erwhelming flood;

He turn'd each lake and ev'ry stream
To lakes and ftreams of blood.

11 He gave the fign, and noisome flies

Through the whole country fpread; And frogs, in croaking armies, rise About the monarch's bed.

12 Through fields, and towns, and palaces, The ten-fold vengeance flew ;

Locufts in fwarms devour'd their trees,
And hail their cattle flew.

13 Then by an angel's midnight stroke,
The flow'r of Egypt dy'd;

14

The strength of ev'ry houfe was broke,
Their glory and their pride.

Now let the world forbear its rage,
Nor put the church in fear;
Ifr'el must live through ev'ry age,
And be th' Almighty's care.

PAUSE II.

15 Thus were th' tribes from bondage brought,
And left the hated ground:
Each fome Egyptian fpoils had got,
And not one feeble found.

16 The Lord himfelf chofe out their way,
And mark'd their journies right;
Gave them a leading cloud by day,
A fiery guide by night.

17 They thirst; and waters from the rock In rich abundance flow,

And following ftill the course they took,
Ran all the defart through.

18 O wond'rous Stream! O blessed Type Of ever-flowing grace!

19

So Chrift our Rock maintains our life
Through all this wilderness.

Thus guarded by th' Almighty Hand
The chofen tribes poffeft

Canaan the rich, the promis'd land,
And there enjoy'd their rest.

20 Then let the world forbear its rage,
The church renounce her fear ;
Ifr'el must live through ev'ry age,
And be th' Almighty's care.

PSALM CVI. ver. 1-5. Long Metre.
Praife to God; or, Communion with faints.

O God the great, the ever bleft,

[ocr errors]

Let fongs of honour be addreft; His mercy firm forever ftands;

Give him the thanks his love demands.

2 Who knows the wonders of thy ways?
Who fhall fulfil thy boundlefs praife?
Bleft are the fouls that fear thee ftill,
And pay their duty to thy will.

3 Remember what thy mercy did
For Jacob's race, thy chofen feed;
And with the fame falvation blefs
The meaneft fuppliant of thy grace.

40 may I fee thy tribes rejoice,
And aid their triumphs with my voice!
This is my glory, Lord, to be
Join'd to thy faints, and near to thee.

They faw thy wonders wrought, And then thy praise they fung; But foon thy works of pow'r forgot, And murmur'd with their tongue. Now they believe his word,

While rocks with rivers flow;

Now, with their lufts provoke the Lord,
And he reduc'd them low.

Yet when they mourn'd their faults,
He hearken'd to their groans;

Brought his own cov'nant to his thoughts,
And call'd them ftill his fons,

Their names were in his book,
He fav'd them from their foes;
Oft he chaftis'd, but ne'er forfook
The people that he chofe.

Let Ifr'el blefs the Lord,

Who lov'd their ancient race;

And chriftians join the folemn word,
Amen, to all their praise.

PSALM CVII. ft Part. Long Metre.
Ifrael led to Canaan, and Christians to Heaven.

'G

IVE thanks to God; he reigns above;
☛ Kind are his thoughts, his name is love;
His mercy, ages past have known,
And ages long to come fhall own.

2 Let the redeemed of the Lord
The wonders of his grace record:
Ifr'el, the nation whom he chofe,
And refcu'd from their mighty foes.
3 [When God's almighty arm had broke
Their fetters and th' Egyptian yoke,
They trac'd the defert, wand'ring round
A wild and folitary ground!

4 There they could find no leading road,
Nor city for a fix'd abode ;

:

Nor food, nor fountain to affuage Their burning thirst, or hunger's tage.] 5 In their diftrefs to God they cry'd; God was their Saviour and their guide; He led their march far wand'ring round; 'Twas the right path to Canaan's ground. 6 Thus when our first release we gain From fin's old yoke, and Satan's chain, We have this defert world to pass, A dang'rous and a tiresome place. 7 He feeds and clothes us all the way, He guides our footsteps left we stray; He guards us with a pow'rful hand, And brings us to the heav'nly land. 8 O let the faints with joy record The truth and goodness of the Lord! How great his works! how kind his ways! Let ev'ry tongue pronounce his praife.

PSALM CVII. 2d Part. Long Metre. Correction for fin, and release by prayer.

I

ROM age to age exalt his name;

He fills the hungry foul with food, And feeds the poor with ev'ry good. 2 But if their hearts rebel, and rife Against the God that rules the skies; If they reject his heav'nly word,

And flight the counfels of the Lord; 3 He'll bring their fpirits to the ground, And no deliv'rer fhall be found:

Laden with grief, they wafte their breath In darkness, and the fhades of death.

4 Then to the Lord they raise their cries; He makes the dawning light arife, And scatters all that difmal fhade That hung fo heavy round their head. 5 He cuts the bars of brafs in two, And lets the fmiling pris'ners through; Takes off the load of guilt and grief, And gives the lab'ring foul relief. 60 may the fons of men record.

The wond'rous goodness of the Lord! How great his works! how kind his ways! Let ev'ry tongue pronounce his praife.

PSALM CVII. 3d Part. Long Metre. Intemperance punished and pardoned; or, a Pfalm for the glutton and the drunkard.

VA

AIN man, on foolish pleafures bent, Prepares for his own punishment; What pains, what loathfome maladies, From luxury and luft arife!

The drunkard feels his vitals waste,
Yet drowns his health to please his taste ;
