CHAPTER 5.

AN ACT to amend the fifth section of an act to incorporate the Northwestern Insurance Company.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. The sixth section of an act entitled "An repealed. Offi- Act to incorporate the Northwestern Insurance Company," approved April first, eighteen hundred and fiftythree, being chapter one hundred and sixty-six of the private and local laws of 1853, is hereby amended to read as follows: It shall be the duty of the Directors on organizing, and immediately after each annual election, to choose from their number a President and Vice President, who shall perform all the duties of the President in case of his absence or inability to attend. They shall also at the same time elect a Secretary, who may, or may not be a Director in said company.

AN ACT to extend the time for the collection of taxes in the city and county of La Crosse.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate end Assembly, do enact as follows:

That on the first Monday in June next, the Treasurer's duTreasurer of said city of La Crosse shall commence the relative to sale of lands upon the taxes or assessments levied under the charter of said city, shall not have been paid and shall continue such sale from day to day until the sale shall be completed. And all sales so made, and the certificates of sale made in pursuance thereof, shall have the same validity and effect as if such sales had taken place at the time and in the manner now prescribed by the charter of said city.

§ 3. Between the first and second Mondays of June City Treasurer next the Treasurer of said city shall make a return to to make return the County Treasurer as required by law, the time for to county treasuch return being hereby extended as in this section specified. And the County Treasurer, upon receiving such returns, shall proceed conformably to the existing laws to collect the taxes so returned by the city Treasurer and unpaid, and on the first Monday of July next he shall proceed to sell all lands upon which the taxes so returned are unpaid and remain unpaid and continue such sale from day to day until completed. And the certificates of such sale so made and given shall have the same validity and effect as if made at the time and in the manner now required by law.

6. This act shall not operate to extend or delay the time for the payment and collection of the State taxes for the year 1857 by the Treasurer of La Crosse county.

87. The city Treasurer is hereby required to pay over all money by him collected for taxes at the time of the taking effect of this act, in the manner now required by law.

8. The term of office of the Treasurer of said city is hereby extended to the first Monday of August next 1858, upon his giving additional bonds to the satisfaction of the Common Council of said city for the faithful discharge of his duties and the payment of all money which shall come into his hands as such Treasurer, at which time the next Treasurer elected at the next charter election in said city shall enter upon the duties of his office.

9. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 7.

AN ACT to provide for selecting and summoning a Grand and Petit Jury in the county of Jefferson.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. That the Circuit Judge who shall hold Judge to issue the February term in 1858 of the Circuit Court, apvenires for ju- pointed by law to be holden in and for the county of Jefferson, shall issue a venire or venires for a jury, to be selected by him from the list made by the last Board of Supervisors in said county aforesaid, for Grand and Petit Jurors to serve at said term, requiring the Sheriff Compensation. of said county to summon twenty-three Grand Jurors, and thirty-six Petit Jurors, which venire shall be made returnable forthwith, and which said Jurors shall be liable to challenge to the poll, or for favor, the same as if they had been drawn and summoned in the ordinary mode, as provided in Chapter 97 of the Revised Statutes.

CHAPTER 8.

§ 2. Said Jury when so summoned and appearing, shall be liable to perform duty in the same manner, and receive the same compensation, and shall be amenable to the Court in the same form and to the same extent and no other, and may be punished the same as Ju- Punishment. rors drawn and summoned in the manner provided for selecting and summoning Jurors by the Revised Statutes of this State.

§ 3. This act shall be construed favorably in all Courts, and take effect and be in force from and after its passage and publication.

AN ACT to repeal an act relating to assessment of taxes in the County of
Wood, approved March 5th, 1857.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

Act of March 5,

SECTION 1. An act, entitled "An act relating to assessment of taxes in the county of Wood," approved 1857, repealed. March 5th, 1857, is hereby repealed, and all the provisions of the Revised Statutes, as well as all other General Laws relating to the assessment, collection or return of taxes, shall from and after the passage of this act, apply to the assessment, collection and return of taxes in said county of Wood.

8 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

CHAPTER 9.

AN ACT to amend chapter 373 of the private and local laws of 1856, entitled "An act to incorporate the North Western Insurance Company of Racine."

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 373 of the Private and Local Laws of 1856 is hereby amended as follows: Wherever in said act the words "North Western Insurance Company" occur, there is hereby inserted in lieu thereof, the words "Commercial Insurance Company." In section two of said act there is hereby inserted in lieu of "six hundred" the words "three hundred." In the same section the words "five hundred" are stricken out.

Commissioners § 2. The names of the commissioners named in section 5 of said act are hereby changed so as to read as follows: Isaac Taylor, John W. Cary, H. J. Ullmann, J. C. Northrop, A. McClarey, Elisha Raymond, Thomas J. Emerson, Eldred Smith and C. S. Chase.

3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

AN ACT to repeal chapter 205 of the private and local laws of 1857, being an act to provide for the assessment of taxes in the counties of Portage and Marathon, and to repeal an act therein named.

The people of the State of Wisconsin, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 205, of the private and local time of making laws of 1857, being an act entitled "an act to provide for the assessment of taxes in the counties of Portage and Marathon, and to repeal an act entitled, "an act to change the time of making assessment of taxes in the counties of Marathon and Portage, approved March 4th, 1857, is hereby repealed.
