Accept their whispered praises,
Nor slight their broken prayer.

Go on thou heir of glory!
No ill can thee betide;
The prize is full before thee,
Thy guardian at thy side.
Who trust in mortal forces,
Their weakness soon shall see,

But God a sure resource is,
And God shall succour thee.

PSALM 23.

THE Lord is my shepherd, no want shall I know,
I feed in green pastures, safe-folded I rest;
He leadeth my soul, where the still waters flow,
Restores me, when wandering, redeems, when
opprest.

Through the valley, and shadow of death, though I

stray,

Since Thou art my guardian, no evil I fear;
Thy rod shall defend me, Thy staff be my stay,
No harm can befall, with my comforter near.

In the midst of affliction, my table is spread,
With blessings unmeasured my cup runneth o'er,
With perfume, and oil Thou anointest my head,
O! what shall I ask of Thy Providence more.

Into Thy holy house I'll come,
And worship in Thy fear,
For Thou with mercies manifold
Dost meet Thy people there.

Joy! joy to those, who trust in Thee,
For still, from age, to age,
Thy mercies, Lord, are multipled
On Thy loved heritage.

PSALM 6.

GENTLY, gently, lay Thy rod,
On my sinful head, Oh God,
Stay Thy wrath, in mercy stay,
Lest I sink before its sway.

Heal me, for my flesh is weak,
Heal me, for Thy grace I seek,
This the only plea I make,
Heal me, for Thy mercy's sake.

Who within the silent grave
Shall proclaim Thy power to save!
Lord, my sinking soul reprieve,
Speak, and I shall rise, and live.

Lo! He comes! He hears my plea!
Lo! He comes! the shadows flee!
Glory round me dawns once more;
Rise, my Spirit, and adore.

PSALM 8.

OH LORD, Our King, how excellent
Thy name on earth is known!
Thy glory in the firmament

How wonderfully shewn!

Yet, are the humble dear to Thee,
Thy praises are confest

By infants, lisping on the knee,
And sucklings at the breast.

When I behold the heavens on high,
The work of Thy right hand;
The moon, and stars amid the sky,
Thy lights in every land;

Lord, what is man, that Thou shouldst deign

On him to set Thy love!

Give him on earth awhile to reign,

Then fill a throne above!

Oh Lord, how excellent Thy name!
How manifold Thy ways!

Time shall Thy saving truth proclaim,
Eternity, Thy praise.

PSALM 8.

Second Version.

OH LORD, Our Lord, of how great worth

Thy name is known on high;

Thou, who hast poured Thy glory forth
Above the eternal sky.

The mouth of babes Thou didst ordain
Thy kingly power to show,

And tongues of sucklings, to restrain,
And lay th' avenger low.

When I behold the heavens on high,

The work of Thy right hand,

The moon, and stars, that walk the sky,
And shine at Thy command;

Lord, what is man, that Thou shouldst deign
To bear him thus in mind?
Or loving thoughts to entertain
Towards his sinful kind!

For Thou hast made him little less

Than angels in degree:

And crowned him with great gloriousness, And true nobility.

Preferred him to be lord Thou hast
Of all Thy works of wonder,
And at his feet all creatures cast,
That he should keep them under.

Oh Lord, our king, of how great worth,
And more exceeding fame,

Than tongue of man can utter forth
Is Thine all glorious name!

PSALM 15.

WHO shall in Thy courts abide? Who shall rest on Zion's hill? For the world's highways are wide, Ever widening, onward still.

He, that on life's crowded road
Passeth uncorrupt along,
Doeth earnestly all good,

Loving truth, and hating wrong.

Who, of spirit meek, and lowly,
Dwelleth not in pride alone,
With the upright, and the holy,
Holding sweet communion.

He, that promising his neighbour, Will not swerve, or turn aside, Sparing neither toil, nor labour, Faithful still, when hardest tried.

He, who seeks not earthly treasure, Nor a base reward to find, Asking no returning measure, Lending with a noble mind.

Wayfarer! whoever thou be'est,

Upward leads the narrow road; And the strait gate, that thou see'st, Opens to the Mount of God.
