Rather than establishing hard-and-fast rules, they provide guidelines for actions in combat, concentrating on mission orders, the focus of effort, and the search for the enemy's surface and gaps (strengths and weaknesses). The three manuals are complemented by b. Col. H. T. Hayden's new material, which sets the theory and practice of Marine Corps doctrine in its historical perspective, looks to the future of maneuver warfare, and comments on the text of the manuals.
