It has been found necessary to include in the Collection some engagements framed more under the requirements of European than of Indian policy, such as the Treaty concluded with the King of the Netherlands in 1824, the Treaties of 1814 and 1857 with the Shah of Persia, and a few others. But, when possible, such Treaties have been excluded, unless the agency of the Indian Government was directly employed in the negotiation of them, or is required to enforce their observance on this principle, the Treaties with Madagascar and Johanna for the suppression of the slave trade, the convention with France regarding the Indian mails and many other important engagements, have not been allowed a place in this Collection. It was the intention of the Compiler to have made a separate collection of all the Treaties concluded by the Crown of England with Foreign Powers, which have a direct bearing on the interests of India; but his transfer to another sphere of duty has prevented the execution of this design. Mr. Belletty of the Foreign Office is preparing an Alphabetical and a Chronological Index to this Collection of Treaties, Engagements, and Sunnuds, which will be published shortly.
