THE PuVOKED HUSBAND Was first acted at Drury Lane in 1728. Party prejudice, which is very frequently called into action under the respectable garb of honest criticism, exhibited the cloven foot most ridiculously on the production of this comedy. That part of it which furnishes the second title of a Journey to London was furiously attacked, as quite inferior to, and unfit to be incorporated with, the more polished scenes of Lord and Lady Townly's domestic differences; and Mr. Cibber, who had finished the play (left imperfect by the death of Sir John Vanbrugh), was stigmatized as the author of these vulgar additions to the posthumous elegancies of the latter dramatist.-After the comedy had been acted more than thirty nights, Cibber undeceived the town by printing, in a detached state, the MS. left him by Sir John, which contained all the scenes relating to the family of the Wrongheads (the critics of course included), without one line of Lord and Lady Townly, who had been so deservedly applauded, and furnished the principal title and interest of the play.
