The American Association for the advancement of Education, assembled in the First Presbyterian Church, in the City of Cleveland, on the 19th day of August, 1851, at half-past two o'clock, P. M. The Association was called to order by the President, the Rt. Rev. ALONZO POTTER, of Pennsylvania. He remarked that this was the first meeting of the Association. Two National Conventions of the friends of Education had been held in Philadelphia in the two previous years—at the first of which, it was resolved that the Association should be organized; and at the second, the present Constitution was adopted. The first meeting, under this Constitution, takes place now. We have come to the shores of your beautiful lake to inaugurate the Association. It is to be national in its character, and even more, it is to be co-extensive, in its aims and operations, with the North American continent. We witnessed in the conventions at Philadelphia representatives of the cause of Education from both the Canadas. We hope, on future occasions, also to meet gentlemen who come from every section of our own land, and from the dominions on this continent of her Imperial Majesty of England. |
