PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION.

Burdened with many other duties, it was with extreme reluctance that I consented to prepare a Fourth Edition of this work. After accepting the task, at a sacrifice of time that might have been, to me, more profitably employed, I made an honest endeavor to produce a result creditable to the author and acceptable to the reader. the attempt has been successful my profession will judge.
