PREFATORY NOTE In the preparation of this book indebtedness to many persons, especially state and local officials, has been incurred for information on various matters. As is evident, extensive use has been made of the leading state newspapers, the Oregonian and the Oregon Journal. These have been supplemented especially by two of the local papers, the Eugene Register and the Eugene Guard. A bibliography of studies by observers of the Oregon System, consulted in this connection, is given in the appendix.
