PREFACE

This FOURTH READER is the last of a series of Reading Books provided for use in the parochial schools of the German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other States. Like its predecessors, it aims to furnish a succession of lessons of such a character as to teach children to read, and to implant in their minds the love of reading. Of course, the subjects in this book are more miscellaneous than in the preceding Readers, but their general character is literary, and not technical. Only a few lessons containing special, or technical, information have been inserted, but they are on popular subjects, and adapted to the minds of children.
