1. WHY standest thou afar, O Lord?

Vouchsafe thy wonted grace.

3. O Lord our God, do thou arise,

Stretch forth thy mighty arm;
And by the greatness of thy power,
Defend thy saints from harm.

Thou art the Saviour of the weak;
The orphan's father, Thou.

5. Assert thy just dominion, Lord,
Which shall for ever stand;

And all iniquity expel,

From this thy chosen land.

The persecuted trusting in God.

1. IN thee O Lord, I put my trust,
Why therefore should I flee?
When hosts of enemies conspire,
My refuge is in thee.

2. The Lord hath both a temple here,
And righteous throne above:
Whence he surveys the sons of men,
And how their counsels move.

3. If God the righteous, whom he loves,
For trial does correct;
What must the sons of violence,
Whom he abhors, expect.

4. The righteous Lord will righteous deeds With signal favour grace;

And to the upright man disclose,
The brightness of his face.

Confidence in God.

1. MY refuge is the Lord on high,

1. HELP, Lord, for men of virtue fail,

But double hearts and tongues prevail,
And treacheries abound.

2. Scoffers appear on every side;
For now the vilest men

Are rais'd to seats of pow'r and pride,
And bear the sword in vain.

3. Yet while their smooth deceits abound, They cannot prosper long;

Thou wilt arise, and wilt confound
The proud and boastful tongue.

4. "Yes," saith the Lord, "now will I rise "And make oppressors flee;

"I will appear to their surprise,
"And set my servants free."

5. As precious silver seven times tried
The words of God are pure;

And all that in his truth confide,
Shall find his promise sure.

The deserted soul praying in faith.

1. HOW long wilt thou forget me, Lord?
Must I for ever mourn ?

How long wilt thou withdraw from me,
Oh! never to return?

2. How long shall anxious thoughts my soul,
And grief my heart oppress?
How long mine enemies insult,
And I have no redress?

3. O hear, and to my longing eyes
Restore thy wonted light;
And suddenly, or I shall sleep
In everlasting light.

4. Since I have always plac'd my trust
Beneath thy mercy's wing;

Thy saving health will come, and then
My heart with joy shall spring.

5. Then shall my song, with praise inspir'd, To thee my God ascend;

Who to thy servant in distress
Such bounty didst extend.

Pleading for deliverance.

1. LORD of mercy just and kind,
Wilt thou ne'er my guilt forgive?
Never shall my troubled mind
In thy kind remembrance live?

2. Shall I wait thy wonted grace,
Still thy favour be denied?

Oh! how long withdraw thy face?
Oh! how long thy mercies hide?

3. Lord, my God, thine ear incline,
Bending to the prayer of faith;
Cheer my eyes with light divine,
Lest I sleep the sleep of death.

4. On thy mercy I rely,

Mercy gracious Lord impart!
Mercy brings salvation nigh,
Mercy shall rejoice my heart.

PSALM 14. (c. M.)

All men sinners.- Salvation.

1. "NO God," the foolish sinner cries,
And sends his fears away;
His heart corrupt, his God defies,
And walks in evil way.

2. The Lord look'd down from his abode
The sons of men to view,
To see if any sought their God,
Or did some good pursue.

3. He saw that all were gone aside,
Their practice all the same:

There's none that makes his God his guide,
There's none that loves his name.

4. Who then shall save this impious race
From guilt, and sin, and woe?

On Calvary's mount behold the grace ;-
From Zion see it flow!
