While all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets, in their turn,
Confirm the tidings, as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.
3. What! though in solemn silence all
Move round this dark terrestrial ball?
What! tho' nor real voice nor sound
Amid their radiant orbs be found?
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice:
For ever singing, as they shine,
"The hand that made us is Divine."

PSALM 19. Part II. (S. M.)

The Word of God most excellent.

1. BEHOLD, the morning sun
Begins his glorious way!
His beams thro' all the nations run,
And light and life convey.

2. But, Lord, thy word supplies
A brighter, holier light;
It trains the simple to be wise,
And gives the blind their sight.

3. How perfect is thy word!
Thy judgments all how just?
To thy unfailing promise, Lord,
May men securely trust.

4. My gracious God how plain
Are thy directions giv'n!
O! may I never read in vain,
But find the path to heav'n!

PSALM 19. Part III. (7s.)

Deliverance from sin and sorrow.

1. BEST instructor, from thy ways
Who can tell how oft he strays?
Save from error's growth our mind:
Leave not, Lord, one root behind.

2. Cleanse us from the guilt that lies
Wrapt within our heart's disguise:
Let us thence, by thee renew'd,
Each presumptuous sin exclude.
3. Let our tongue, from falsehood free,
Speak the words approv'd by thee;
To thine all-observing eyes
Let our thoughts accepted rise.

4. While we thus thy name adore,
And thy healing grace implore,
Blest Redeemer! bow thine ear:
God, our strength! propitious hear.

PSALM 20. (L. M.)

For protection against national foes.
1. HEAR us, O Lord, in time of need,
And let thy name our cause defend;
Grant that our efforts may succeed,
And vict'ry on our steps attend.

2. On horse and chariot some rely,

And some in numbers make their boast:
Our trust is in the Lord most high;
His favour is itself an host.

3. In his salvation we rejoice,

And lift our banners in his name;
Lord, hear our supplicating voice,

And put our haughty foes to shame.

4. O succour and preserve our king,
And bless with peace our favour'd land;
That we may still thy glory sing,
By whose protecting care we stand.

PSALM 21. (C. M.)

Gratitude for national mercy and protection. 1. THE King, O Lord, with songs of praise, Shall in thy strength rejoice; And blest with thy salvation raise To heav'n his cheerful voice.

2. Thy sure defence through nations round Hath spread his pow'rful name:

And his successful actions crown'd
With majesty and fame.

3. Then let the king on God alone
For timely aid rely;

His mercy shall support his throne,
And all his wants supply.

4. Thy blessing, Lord, on him bestow,
Ånd ev'ry needful grace;

To him and us unclouded show
The brightness of thy face.

5. Thus, Lord, thy wondrous power declare, And thus exalt thy fame;

While we glad songs of praise prepare
For thine almighty name.

PSALM 22.

Part I. (C. M.)

The sufferings of Christ.

1. "MY God, my God, why me forsake? "Why deaf when I complain ?" Thus did our Lord with anguish cry? Yet seem'd to cry in vain.

2. Behold him treated like a worm,
Like none of human birth:
Scorn'd as an outcast, and revil'd
With words of spiteful mirth.

3. Our Saviour's blood like water flow'd;
For us he suffer'd scorn;

For us his sacred hands and feet
With cruel nails were torn.

4. As spoil his garments did they part,
Lots for his vesture cast;

But God, his God, his strength and ours,
Did to his succour haste.

5. Now to his brethren he declares
God's ever glorious name:
O let us fear and praise the Lord,
And all his grace proclaim.

PSALM 22. Part II. (L. M.)

Christ's victory and reign.

1. BLEST Saviour! by thy Spirit taught, Thy grace in sweet remembrance brought, Earth's utmost coasts shall hear, and flee In holy ecstacy to Thee.

2. Her mightiest sons thy name shall bless,
Her sceptred kings thy right confess :
Soon shall they worship at thy throne;
Thine is the kingdom, thine alone.

3. Thus, while thy Spirit life supplies,
Through earth a num'rous seed shall rise
Their willing tribute to afford;
Known as the servants of the Lord.

4. From age to age, their joyful tongues
Shall praise thy righteousness in songs:
Transmit to distant times thy name,
Till earth's last sons thy work proclaim.

PSALM 23. Version 1. (c. M.)

Christ the Shepherd of his people.

1. MY Shepherd will supply my need,
Jehovah is his name;

In pastures fresh he makes me feed,
Beside the living stream.

2. He brings my wand'ring spirit back
When I forsake his ways;

And leads me for his mercy's sake,
In paths of truth and grace.

3. When through the darkest vale I pass,
Thy presence is my stay;
Thy power and thy supporting grace
Drive all my fears away.

4. Thy hand in sight of all my foes
Doth still my table spread;

My cup with blessings overflows,
Thine oil anoints my head.
