3. Thy mercy chas'd the shades of death,
And snatch'd me from the grave;
O may thy praise employ that breath,
Which mercy deign'd to save.

4. To thee, my gracious God, I raise
My thankful heart and tongue;
Oh! be thy goodness and thy praise
My everlasting song.

PSALM 31. Version 1. (C. M.)

Trust in God.

1. LORD, in thy great, thy glorious name, I place my only trust;

Save me from sorrow, guilt, and shame,
Thou ever good and just.

2. Into thy hand, O gracious Lord,
My spirit I resign:

O give me grace to trust thy word,
For heav'nly truth is thine.

3. Blest be my God, for ever blest,
Who bids my fears remove:

The sacred walls that guard my rest
Are everlasting love.

4. How great his daily mercies are
To such as fear his name,

Which he, for those that trust his care,
Doth to the world proclaim!

5. Ye humble souls, who seek his face,
Let courage fill your heart;

Hope in the Lord, and trust his grace,
And he will strength impart.

PSALM 31. Version II. (L. M.)

Faith in the guardian care of God.

1. GOD of my strength, the wise, the just,
My life, mine all, to thee I trust;
From thee, when terrors clos'd me round,
My soul its full redemption found.

2. Thy mercy shall my thanks employ;
For thou, my theme, my life, my joy,
Hast call'd me thine, and bid me share
The gifts of thy paternal care.

3. O how shall all, who seek thy love,
The fulness of thy bounty prove;
And teach th' admiring world to see,
How blest the souls that trust in Thee!

4. Thy saints, afar from strife of tongues,
Shall sing to Thee their peaceful songs,
And see thy guardian presence spread
Its awful splendours o'er their head.

PSALM 32. Version 1. (S. M.)

The Blessedness of Pardon.

1. O BLESSED souls are they
Whose sins are cover'd o'er!
Divinely blest, to whom the Lord
Imputes their guilt no more.

2. They mourn their follies past,
And keep their hearts with care;
Their lips and lives without deceit
Shall prove their faith sincere.

3. While I conceal'd my guilt,
I felt the fest'ring wound:
Then I confess'd my sins to Thee,
And ready pardon found.

4. Let sinners learn to pray;

Let saints keep near the throne: Our help, in times of deep distress, Is found in God alone.

PSALM 32. Version 11. (L. M.)

The Blessedness of Pardon.

1. HOW blest the man, whose conscious grief
From thee, great God, has found relief!
Whose guilt thy boundless love has veil'd,
His fears compos'd, his weakness heal'd.

2. My humbled soul its crimes shall own:
Behold me bow before thy throne!
To thee my inmost guilt disclose,
And in thine ear pour all my woes.

3. O come and let us seek his face,
Ere yet is past the day of grace;
To him with stedfast hope repair,
To him prefer th' unwearied prayer.

4. So, when the storms and tempests lour,
And floods of wrath their torrents pour,
We from the floods and stormy wind
In him a hiding-place shall find.

PSALM 33. Part 1. (c. M.)

The Righteous rejoicing in God.

1. LET all the just to God with joy
Their cheerful voices raise;

For well the righteous it becomes
To sing glad songs of praise.

2. For faithful is the word of God,
His works with truth abound;
He justice loves, and all the earth
Is with his goodness crown'd.

3. By his Almighty word at first,

Heaven's glorious arch was rear'd;
And all the beauteous hosts of light,
At his command appear'd.

4. Let earth, and all that dwell therein,
Before him trembling stand;

For when he spake the word, 'twas made, 'Twas fix'd at his command.

5. Whate'er the mighty Lord decrees,
Shall stand for ever sure;

The settled purpose of his heart,
To ages shall endure.

PSALM 33. Part II. (C. M.)

God's favour to his people.

1. OUR souls on God with patience wait,
Our help and shield is he;

O Lord, let still our hearts rejoice,
Because we trust in thee.

2. The Lord on all that trust in him,
Looks down with gracious eyes;
His mercy saves their souls from death,
Their every want supplies.

3. How happy then are they to whom
The Lord as God is known!

Whom he from all the world beside
Has chosen for his own!

4. The riches of thy mercy, Lord,
Do thou to us extend,

Since we for all we want or wish
On thee alone depend.

PSALM 34. (C. M.)

Praise for deliverance from trouble.

1. THRO' all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy,

The praises of my God shall still
My heart and tongue employ.

2. Of his deliv'rance I will boast,
Till all that are distress'd,
From my example comfort take,
And soothe their griefs to rest.

3. Come, magnify the Lord with me,-
With me exalt his name;
When in distress to Him I call'd,
He to my rescue came.

4. Oh! make but trial of his love;
Experience will decide,

How bless'd are they, and only they,
Who in the Lord confide.
