5. Here will I rest and build my hope,
Nor murmur at his rod ;

He's more than all the world to me,
My father and my God.

PSALM 43. (L. M.)

Divine Comfort in Distress.

1. MY gracious God, I breathe to thee My earnest hope, my fervent prayer; From all my sorrows set me free,

From all the ills I dread, or bear.

2. Let me with light and truth be blest, Be these my guides to lead the way; Till on thy holy hill I rest,

And in thy sacred temple pray.

3. Then to thine altar will I go,

To God who is my life, my joy;
My grateful heart with love shall glow,
While songs of praise my lips employ.

4. Why then cast down, my soul? and why
So much opprest with doubt and fear?
On God, thy God, for help rely;
His grace the troubled heart will cheer.

PSALM 44. (L. M.)

The Church's Prayer under Persecution.

1. OFT have our ears, Great God, been taught,
What for our fathers Thou hast wrought;
While, with adoring minds they told
The wonders of thy works of old.

2. So we disclaim our bow or sword,
And wait salvation from the Lord!
On thee we trust, thy succour claim,
Thy presence puts our foes to shame.

3. From morning dawn to evening close,
Still firm on Thee our hopes repose:
Rise for our help, eternal Lord!
Salvation shall attend thy word.

4. Thy mercy, Lord, alone we claim;
Redeem us, and exalt thy fame :
Then to thy glorious Name we'll raise
The tribute of eternal praise.

PSALM 45. (L. M.)

The Glory of Christ and his Gospel.

1. NOW be our hearts inspired to sing, The triumphs of our Saviour-King: Jesus the Lord! how heavenly fair His form! how bright his glories are!

2. O'er all the sons of human race

He shines with a superior grace:
Love from his lips divinely flows,
And blessings all his state compose.

3. Dress thee in arms, most mighty Lord; Gird on the terror of thy sword;

In righteousness and glory ride,
With truth and meekness at thy side.

4. Thy throne, O God, for ever stands;
Grace is the sceptre in thy hands:
Thy laws and works are just and right;
Mercy and truth are thy delight.

PSALM 46. Part 1. (P. M.)

God the sure Refuge of his Church.

1. GOD is our refuge in distress,
A present help when dangers press,
In him will we confide:

Though earth were from her centre tost,
And mountains in the ocean lost,
Secure should we abide.

2. Above the tempest's rudest shock,
Fixt on an everlasting rock,
God's holy city stands;

There streams of living waters flow,
And God protects all those who know
And honour his commands.

3. Submit to his almighty sway;
His power the heathen shall obey,
And earth her Lord confess :
The God of Hosts will keep from harm,
Will be our refuge in alarm,

Our helper in distress.

PSALM 46. Part II. (L. M.)

Peace restored.

1. LET Sion in her King rejoice,
When tyrants rage and kingdoms rise;
He utters his Almighty voice,-
The nations melt, the tumult dies!

2. The Lord of old for Israel fought,
And Israel's God is still our aid;
Behold the works his hand has wrought,
What desolations he has made!

3. From sea to sea through all the shores, He makes the noise of battle cease: When from on high his thunder roars, He awes the trembling world to peace.

4. Bé still, and know that He is God!
Worship the glory of his Name!

He reigns through all the world abroad,
Let all the world his praise proclaim.

PSALM 46. Version 11. (L. M.)

The safety of the Citizens of Zion.

1. GOD is our refuge and defence, In trouble our unfailing aid; Secure in his Omnipotence,

What foe can make our soul afraid?

2. Yea, though the earth's foundations rock,
And mountains down the gulf be hurl'd,
His people smile amid the shock,
They look beyond this transient world.

3. There is a river pure and bright, Whose streams make glad the heavenly plains;

Where, in eternity of light,

The city of our God remains.

4. Built by the word of his command, With his unclouded presence blest, Firm as his throne the bulwarks stand; There is our home, our hope, our rest.

PSALM 47. Version 1. (L. M.)

The Ascension of Christ.

1. O ALL ye people, clap your hands,
And with triumphant voices sing:

No force the mighty power withstands
Of God the universal king.

2. God is gone up, our Lord and King, With shouts of joy and trumpet's sound; To him repeated praises sing,

And let the cheerful song go round.

3. Your utmost skill in praise be shown,

For him who all the world commands;
Who sits upon his righteous throne,
And spreads his sway o'er heathen lands.

PSALM 47. Version 11. (c. M.)

Christ ascending and reigning.

1. O FOR a shout of sacred joy
To God, the sovereign King!
Let every land their tongues employ,
And hymns of triumph sing!

2. Jesus, our God, ascends on high;
His heavenly guards around
Attend him, rising through the sky,
With trumpets' joyful sound.

3. While angels shout and praise their King, Let mortals learn their strains;

Let all the earth his honours sing,
O'er all the earth he reigns.
