4. Rehearse his praise with awe profound; Let knowledge lead the song;

Nor mock him with a solemn sound
Upon a thoughtless tongue.

5. In Israel stood his ancient throne,
He lov'd that chosen race;

1.

2.

3.

4.

5.

But now he calls the world his own,
And Gentiles taste his grace.

[blocks in formation]

The Church the safeguard of the Nation.

GREAT is the Lord our God,
And let his praise be great;

He makes his churches his abode,
His most delightful seat.

These temples of his grace
How beautiful they stand!
The honours of our native place,
And bulwarks of our land!

In Zion God is known

A refuge in distress:

How bright has his salvation shone,

Through all her palaces!

In every new distress
We'll to his house repair,

We'll think

upon his wondrous grace,

And seek deliv'rance there.

The God we worship now,

Will guide us till we die;

Will be our God while here below,
And ours above the sky.

PSALM 49. (L. M.)

The Vanity of Earthly Distinctions. 1. LET all, of ev'ry rank and age, Around in list'ning numbers throng; For wisdom shall my thoughts engage, And heav'nly truth inspire my tongue. 2. How vain the power that wealth can give, Alas, how impotent to save!

Can riches bid the sinner live,
Or keep a brother from a grave?

3. Array'd in rank, with honour crown'd,
Man cannot long on earth abide;
For soon his place shall not be found,
Forgotten shall be all his pride.

4. But when the just the earth shall leave, (For, like the wicked, they must die ;) God will their ransom'd souls receive To reign with him eternally.

PSALM 50. Version 1. (8.8.8.)

The solemnity of God's judgment.

1. THE Lord hath spoke; the mighty God. Hath sent his summons all abroad,

From dawning light till day declines: The list'ning earth his voice hath heard; And he from Zion hath appear'd, Where beauty in perfection shines. 2. Our God shall come, and keep no more Misconstru'd silence, as before;

But wasting flames before him send; And, while around him tempests rage, Himself shall heaven and earth engage, His just tribunal to attend.

3. No sacrifice hath he requir'd,

Save hearts with love and zeal inspir'd;
And holy deeds to make them known.
Who praises God, due honour gives,
And to the man that justly lives
His great salvation will be shown.

PSALM 50. Version 11. (8.7.4.)

The Last Judgment.

1. LO! the Mighty God appearing,
From on high Jehovah speaks!
Eastern lands the summons hearing,
O'er the West his thunder breaks:
Earth beholds him!-

Universal nature shakes!

2. To the heavens his voice ascending,
To the earth beneath he cries:
Souls immortal now descending,-
Now the sleeping dead arise!
"Rise to judgment-

66

66 Let my

throne adorn the skies."

3. Gather first my saints around me, "Those who to my cov'nant stood; "Those who humbly sought and found me, "Through the dying Saviour's blood: Bless'd Redeemer !

Sweetest sacrifice to God!

4. Now the heavens on high adore him,
And his righteousness declare:
Sinners perish from before him,
But his saints his mercies share :
Just his judgment—

God Himself the Judge is there!

PSALM 51. Part I. (L. M.)

A penitent pleading for pardon.

1. SHOW pity, Lord; O Lord, forgive!
Let a repenting sinner live:

Are not thy mercies large and free?
May not the guilty trust in thee?

2. My crimes, though great, do not surpass
The power and glory of thy grace;
Oh! wash my soul from every sin,
And make my guilty conscience clean.
3. My lips with shame my sins confess
Against thy law, against thy grace:
Lord, should thy judgment grow severe,
I am condemn'd but thou art clear.

4. Yet save a trembling sinner, Lord,
Whose hope, still hov'ring round thy word,
Would light on some sweet promise there,
Some sure support against despair.

PSALM 51.

Part II. (L. M.)

Original and actual sins confessed.

1. LORD, I am vile, conceiv'd in sin,
And born unholy and unclean;
Sprung from the man whose guilty fall
Corrupts his race, and taints us all.

2. Great God, create my heart anew,
And form my spirit pure and true;
O make me wise, betimes to see
My danger and my remedy.

3. Behold, I fall before thy face;
My only refuge is thy grace:

No outward forms can cleanse from sin,
That leprosy lies deep within.

4. Jesus, my God, whose blood alone
Hath power sufficient to atone;
Now let me hear thy pard'ning voice,
And make my troubled soul rejoice.

PSALM 51. Part III. (L. M.)

Prayer for pardon, purity, and joy.

1. O THOU that hear'st when sinners cry!
Though all my crimes before Thee lie,
Behold them not with angry look,
But blot their mem'ry from thy book.

2. Create my nature pure within,
And form my soul averse to sin;
Let thy good Spirit ne'er depart,
Nor hide thy presence from my

heart.

3. I cannot live without thy light,
Cast out and banish'd from thy sight:
Thy holy joys, my God, restore;
And guard me that I fall no more.

4. Though I have griev'd thy Spirit, Lord, His help and comfort still afford;

And let a wretch come near thy throne,
To plead the merits of thy Son.
