PSALM 51. Part IV. (L. M.)

Supplication for Mercy and Pardon.

1. A BROKEN heart, my God, my King, Is all the sacrifice I bring:

The God of grace will ne'er despise
A broken heart for sacrifice.

2. My soul lies humbled in the dust,

And owns thy dreadful sentence just:
Look down, O Lord! with pitying eye,
And save the soul condemn'd to die.

3. Then will I teach the world thy ways;
Sinners shall learn thy sov'reign grace;
I'll lead them to my Saviour's blood,
And they shall praise a pard'ning God.
4. Oh may thy love inspire my tongue!
Salvation shall be all my song;
And all my powers shall join to bless
The Lord my strength and righteousness.

PSALM 52. (C. M.)

God the Avenger and Protector of his People.

1. WHY should the wicked boast the power To work another's woe?

When God's compassions ev'ry hour
In streams of goodness flow?

2. God will a swift destruction send,
And pluck them from their place;
The righteous shall behold their end,
And scorn the guilty race.

E

3. But like an olive fresh and green,
I, in thy court shall stand;

Because, O God, my trust hath been
On thy protecting hand.

4. Thine acts of mercy to proclaim
I'll raise my grateful voice:
And hope for ever in thy name,
In which thy saints rejoice.

PSALM 53. (L. M.)

Universal Apostacy from God.

1. FROM heaven the mighty Lord look'd
down,

From heaven, his high exalted throne,
To see throughout this world's abode,
Who understand and seek their God.

2. From his appointed righteous way,
All, all, alas! have gone astray;

The paths of peace they have not known;
And none is righteous, no, not one.

3. Guilty, deprav'd, condemn'd and lost,
Who before God hath aught to boast?
Arise, O Sion's King, arise,

And bring salvation from the skies.

4. Then shall thy saints exulting sing,
And each glad heart its tribute bring;
Pardon and peace shall then be given,
And earth resound with songs of heaven.

PSALM 54. (C. M.)

For Deliverance from Injustice.

1. LORD, save me by thy glorious name, And in thy strength appear:

Judge thou my cause, accept my prayer,
And to my words give ear.

2. Oppressors, whom I never wrong'd,
My guiltless soul pursue;
But thou wilt surely help me, Lord,
And all my foes subdue.

3. Then will I glorify thy name,
And worship thee with joy;
And in thy service, and thy praise,
My future life employ.

4. From all my trouble and distress
The Lord will set me free;
Thro' him shall I be conqu'ror made,
And full deliv'rance see.

PSALM 55. (c. M.)

Confidence in the Defence and support of God.

1. IN God, most holy, just, and true,
I have repos'd my trust;

Nor will I fear what man can do,
Nor all th' infernal host.

2. By morning light I'll seek his face,
At noon repeat my cry;

The night shall hear me ask his grace,
Nor will he long deny.

3. God shall preserve my soul from fear,
Or shield me when afraid;
Ten thousand angels must appear,
If he command their aid.

4. I cast my burdens on the Lord,
His care is always nigh;
My courage rests upon his word,
That saints shall never die.

5. My highest hopes shall not be vain,
My lips shall spread his praise;
Ere long my foes shall all be slain,
And glory crown my days.

PSALM 56. (c. M.)

God a Refuge from Man's Oppression.

1. HAVE mercy, Lord, on me, I pray,
For threat'ning foes appal;
They strive against me day by day,
And fain would work my fall.

2. But Lord, on thee, the pure, the true, I fix my steadfast trust;

Nor will I fear what man can do,—
The offspring of the dust.

3. Thy pitying eye hath seen my tears,
And noted all my woes;

I know that thou wilt hear my prayers,
And save me from my foes.

4. Thou hast preserv'd my soul from death; To thee my vows I'll pay;

O, while I yet have life and breath,
Uphold me in thy way.

PSALM 57. Part I. (L. M.)

The guardian care of God.

1. WHEN gath'ring storms around me
spread,

My gracious God, command thy aid;
Beneath thy wings my soul I'll cast,
Till life's last gloomy hour be past.

2. Up to Jehovah, God most high,
Thro' earth's dark clouds I send my cry,
Whose mercy can assuage the storm,
And all I want or wish perform.

3. From heaven my God his aid shall send, From every enemy defend;

His mercy and his truth display,
Nor let my fiercest foes dismay.

4. Be thou exalted, O my God,
Above the heavens, thy high abode !
O'er all the glories earth can claim,
Extend the honours of thy name.

PSALM 57. Part II. (L. M.)

Praise to God.

1. O GOD, my heart is fixt, is bent, Its thankful tribute to present;

And, with my heart, my voice I'll raise,
To thee my God in songs of praise.

2. Awake my heart, awake my voice,
And in harmonious hymns rejoice;
With morning's earliest dawn awake,
Your part in prayer and praise to take.
