5. Safe in thy guardian care, I close
My weary sleepy eyes;

Safe shall my slumbering frame repose,
Till thou shalt bid it rise.

PSALM 5. (C. M.)

Seeking God in his house.

1. LORD, in the morning thou shalt hear
My voice ascending high;
To thee will I direct my prayer,
To thee lift up mine eye.

2. Oft to thy house will I resort
To taste thy mercies there;
I will frequent thy holy court,
And worship in thy fear.

3. O may thy spirit guide my feet
In ways of truth and grace;
Make every path of duty straight,
And plain before my face!

4. All they that love and fear thy name,
Shall see their hopes fulfill'd;
The mighty God will compass them
With favour as a shield.

PSALM 6. (C. M.)

The Prayer of the Penitent.

1. IN tender mercy, not in wrath,
Rebuke us, gracious God,

Lest, if thy whole displeasure rise,
We fall beneath thy rod.

2. Touch'd by thy spirit's quick'ning power, Our load of guilt we feel;

The wounds thy spirit hath unclos'd,
Oh! let that spirit heal.

3. Opprest with Satan's galling yoke,
Must we for ever mourn?

And wilt thou not at length, O God,
In pitying love return?

4. O come with speed, 'ere life expire,
And show thy pow'r to save:
For who shall sing thy name in death,
Or praise thee in the grave?

5. Why should our souls distrust thy grace,
Or yield to dark despair?
Do thou fulfil thy promis'd word,
And grant us all our prayer.

PSALM 7. (P. M.)

God's protection implored.

1. O THOU, the Holy and the Just,
My God, in whom I put my trust,
Deliver me from woe;

Preserve me with thy watchful care,
Nor leave my helpless soul to bear
The vengeance of the foe.

2. O let the cause of truth prevail;
Let every evil project fail

That wicked men devise:

Thy wrath, O Lord, will fiercely burn,
Against the souls that will not turn
From vanity and lies.

3. But thou, who searchest every heart,
Wilt never let thy love depart

From one who seeks thy face;
Thou art my help, and I will raise
To thee the voice of constant praise,
For thine unbounded grace.

PSALM. Version 1. (C. M.)

God's distinguishing love to man.

1. O THOU, to whom all creatures bow
Within this earthly frame,

Thro' all the world how great art thou!
How glorious is thy name!

2. In heaven thy wondrous acts are sung,
Nor fully reckon'd there;

And yet thou mak'st the infant-tongue
Thy boundless praise declare.

3. When heav'n, thy beauteous work on high, Employs my wond'ring sight:

The moon, that nightly rules the sky,
With stars of feebler light:

4. Lord! what is man that thou shouldst deign To bear him in thy mind?

Or condescend to visit him,
In human flesh enshrin'd.

5. O Lord our God, exalted high!
Thy name is all divine:

Thy glories round the earth are spread,
And o'er the heav'ns they shine.

PSALMS. Version 11. (c. M.)

God's condescension to man.

1. O LORD our God, how wondrous great
Is thy exalted name ?
The glories of thy heav'nly state
Let men and babes proclaim.

2. When I behold thy works on high,
The moon that rules the night,
And stars that well adorn the sky,
Those moving worlds of light :-

3. Lord, what is man, or all his race,
Who dwells so far below,

That thou should'st visit him with grace,
And love his nature so,-

4. That thine eternal Son should bear
To take a mortal form,
Made lower than his angels are,
To save a dying worm?

5. O Lord! how glorious is thy name
Above the highest heaven!

To thee throughout the earth's wide frame
Eternal praise be given.

PSALM 9. Part 1. (c. M.)

Praise for God's goodness.

1. TO celebrate thy praise, O Lord,
I will my heart prepare;

To all the list'ning world thy works,--
Thy wondrous works declare.

2. The thoughts of them shall to my soul
Exalted pleasures bring;

Whilst to thy name, O Thou most High,
Triumphant praise I sing.

3. God is a constant sure defence
Against oppressive rage;

As troubles rise, his needful aids
In our behalf engage.

4. All they that have his goodness prov'd,
Will in his truth confide:

His

mercy

ne'er forsook the man,

That on his help rely'd.

5. Sing praises therefore to the Lord,
From Zion his abode;

Proclaim his deeds, till all the world
Confess no other God.

PSALM 9. Part II. (c. M.)

Christ adored as a Judge.

1. BEHOLD! the Saviour lives and reigns, High on his throne above:

His seat for judgment is prepar'd

In righteousness and love.

2. The saints who know their Saviour's name,
And taste his pard'ning grace,
Shall all with joy before him stand,
And see him face to face.

3. But sinful men, who love their sins,
Must feel his vengeful rod;

The wicked shall be turn'd to hell,
And all who fear not God.
