2. Let heaven and earth his might confess, And joyful saints before him bend;

Let songs of praise his goodness bless,-
The orphan's hope, the widow's friend.

3. O praise his name, our hope, our stay,
In whom we live, by whom we stand;
Whose strength will guard us on the way,
And bring us to the promis'd land.

PSALM 68. Part II. (L. M.)

Ascension of Christ.-Gift of the Spirit.

1. LORD, when Thou didst ascend on high,
Ten thousand angels fill'd the sky;
Those heavenly guards around thee wait,
Like chariots that attend thy state.

2. Not Sinai's mountain could appear

More glorious, when the Lord was there;
While he pronounc'd his holy law,
And struck the chosen tribes with awe.

3. How bright the triumph none can tell,
When the rebellious powers of hell,
That thousand souls had captive made,
Were all in chains as captives led.

4. Rais'd by the Father to his throne,
He sent the promis'd Spirit down,
With gifts and grace for rebel-men,
That God might dwell on earth again.

PSALM 68. Part III. (L. M.)

God the Deliverer of his people.

1. KINGDOMS and thrones to God belong,
Crown him, ye nations, in your song:
His name Jehovah sounds on high,
He rides in thunder thro' the sky!

2. Proclaim him King, pronounce him blest,
He's our defence, our joy, our rest;
When terrors rise, and nations faint,
God is the strength of every saint.

3. The Lord that bruis'd the serpent's head
On all the serpent's seed shall tread;
The stubborn sinner's hope confound,
And smite him with a lasting wound.

4. But his right hand the saints shall raise From the deep earth, or deeper seas; And bring them to his courts above, There they shall taste his special love.

PSALM 68. Part IV. (L. M.)

Prayer for Zion-Gentiles converted.

1. TO visit Salem, Lord, descend,
And Sion thy terrestial throne;
Then kings with presents shall attend,
And thee a higher king shall own.

2. Egypt shall then to thee stretch forth
Her hands, and Afric homage bring:
The scatter'd kingdoms of the earth,
Their common Sov'reign's praises sing

3. Ascribe ye power to God most high,
Of humble Israel he takes care;
Whose strength from out the dusky sky
Darts shining terrors through the air.
4. How dreadful are the sacred courts,

Where God has fix'd his earthly throne!
His strength his feeble saints supports;
To Him give praise and Him alone.

PSALM 69. Part I. (L. M.)
Sufferings of the Redeemer.

1. DEEP in our hearts let us record
The deeper sorrows of our Lord:
Behold the rising billows roll,
To overwhelm his holy soul.

2. In long complaints he spends his breath,
While hosts of hell, and powers of death,
And men with causeless hatred join,
To execute their base design.

3 His dying pangs for us, O Lord,
The honours of thy law restor❜d;
His sorrows made thy justice known,
And paid for follies not his own.
4. Oh! for his sake our guilt forgive,
And let the mourning sinner live!
The Lord will hear us in his name,
Nor shall our hope be turn'd to shame.
PSALM 69. Part II. (C. M.)
Christ suffering for Sinners.

1. LET sinners now salvation seek
Through Jesu's blessed name;
For he has borne their heavy load
Of sorrow, guilt, and shame.

2. Grief like a garment cloth'd him round,
And sackcloth was his dress,
While he procur'd for naked souls
A robe of righteousness.

3. Amongst his brethren and the Jews,
He like a stranger stood,

And bore their vile reproach to bring
The gentiles near to God.

4. His fasting and his holy groans

Were made the drunkard's song;
But God from his celestial throne,
Heard his complaining tongue.

5. He sav'd him from the dreadful deep,
And rais'd him up on high:
And for his sake, he now will hear
The dying sinner's cry.

PSALM 69. Part III. (c. M.)

Praise more acceptable than Sacrifice. 1. FATHER, we sing thy wondrous grace, And bless our Saviour's name : He brought salvation for the poor, And bore the sinner's shame.

2. Our constant praise, and thankful songs, Will better please our God,

Than all the beasts on altars slain,-
Than goats, or bullocks' blood.

3. This shall thy humble followers see,
And set their hearts at rest,-

Thro' Jesu's death draw near to thee,
And live for ever blest.

4. Let heaven, and all that dwell on high, To God their voices raise :

While lands and seas assist the sky
To spread abroad his praise.

PSALM 70. (c. M.)

For comfort and support in trouble.

1. WHEN sorrows vex, and foes invade, My God, I cry to thee;

As thou art still a present aid,

O haste to succour me.

2. Let shame reward the hope of those
My helpless soul that spurn;

And let the malice of my foes
To their confusion turn.

3. Let all who humbly seek thy face
Be joyful in thy name;

And such as love thy saving grace
Thy power and truth proclaim.

4. To thee, my God, the mourner's friend, For timely help I pray;

On thee alone my hopes depend;
O Lord, make no delay.

PSALM 71. Part 1. (c. M.)

God our unfailing Refuge.

1. IN thee we put our steadfast trust,
Defend us, Lord, from shame;
Incline thine ear and save our souls,
For righteous is thy name.
