3. Behold the vineyard made by thee!
Which thy right hand did guard so long;
And keep that branch from danger free,
Which for thyself thou mad'st so strong.

4. Turn us again, O Lord, do thou
The brightness of thy face display;
And all the ills we suffer now,
Like scatter'd clouds shall pass away.

PSALM 81. (c. M.)

Praise on the Sacred Festivals.

1. TO God, our strength, your voice aloud
In strains of glory raise;
High to Jehovah, Jacob's God,
Exalt the notes of praise.

2. With psalms of honour and of joy,
Let all his temples ring;
Your various instruments employ,
And songs of triumph sing.

3. Now let the Gospel-Trumpet blow,
On each appointed feast,

And teach his waiting Church to know
The Sabbath's sacred rest.

4. This was the statute of the Lord,
To Israel's favour'd race;

And yet his courts preserve his word,
And there we wait his grace.

PSALM 82. (c. M.)

Uprightness required in Rulers.

1. THE Lord among the mighty stands,
Where his impartial eye

In state surveys the earthly gods,
And will their judgments try.

2. O never then, unjustly judge,
Nor for the wicked plead!
Defend the orphan and the poor,
And succour them that need.

3. Protect the humble, helpless man,
Reduced to deep distress;

And let him not become a prey
To such as would oppress.

4. They know not, Lord, nor will they learn,
Their name of gods is vain;
Though mighty rulers, they shall fall,
And die like other men.

5. Arise, O God, and judge the earth;
Thy righteousness display:
The world is thine inheritance,
And man shall own thy sway.

PSALM 83. (c. M.)

The Church assailed by the Wicked.

1. HOLD not thy peace, O Lord our God, Nor longer silent be;

For they lift up their heads on high
Who hatred bear to thee.

2. Against thy faithful people, Lord,
They form the dark design;
And to destroy thy chosen saints,
In guilty league combine.

3. Like stubble scatter'd by the storm,
Like wood amidst the flame,

Shall they be with thy judgments vex'd,
That they may own thy name.

4. So shall the wond'ring world confess
That thou art God alone;
That highest over all the earth
Exalted is thy throne.

PSALM 84. Version 1. (C. M.)

The excellency of the Sanctuary.

1. O GOD of Hosts, the mighty Lord,
How beauteous is the place

Where thou, enthron'd in glory, show'st
The brightness of thy face.

2. My longing soul faints with desire
To view thy blest abode;

My heart and flesh cry out for thee,
For thee, the living God.

3. Thrice happy they, whose choice has thee Their sure protection made;

Who long to tread the sacred ways
That to thy dwelling lead.

4. They shall from strength to strength proceed And still approach more near;

Till all on Zion's holy mount

Before their God

appear.

5. The God who is our sun and shield,
Will grace and glory give,

And no good thing will he withhold
From them that justly live.

PSALM 84. Version 11. (P. M.)

Delighting in the House of God.

1. LORD of the worlds above,
How pleasant and how fair,
The dwellings of thy love,
Thy earthly temples are!
My heart aspires to thine abode,
With warm desire to see my God.

2. The sparrow for her young,
With pleasure seeks a nest;
And wandering swallows long
To find their wonted rest:
With equal zeal my spirit faints,
To rise and dwell among thy saints.

3.

O happy souls that pray

Where God appoints to hear;
O happy men that pay

Their constant service there!
Thrice happy they that praise thee still,
And love the way to Zion's hill.

4. They go from strength to strength
Through this dark vale of tears,
Till each arrives at length,

Till each in heaven appears:
O God, our King, to that blest seat,
Direct and bring our willing feet.

PSALM 84. Part II. (P. M.)

The Believer's Choice.

TO spend one sacred day
Where God and saints abide,
Affords diviner joy

Than thousand days beside:

To keep the door where God resorts,
I love far more than shine in courts.

2. God is our sun and shield,

Our light and our defence;
With gifts his hands are fill'd,
We draw our blessings thence:
On Jacob's race he shall bestow,
Peculiar grace and glory too.

3. The Lord his people loves;
His hand no good withholds
From those his heart approves,
From pure and pious souls:
O God of Hosts, thrice happy he
Whose spirit trusts alone in thee,
PSALM 85. Version 1. (L. M.)

Salvation by the Incarnation of Christ.

1. SALVATION is for ever nigh
The souls that fear and trust the Lord;
And grace descending from on high
Fresh hopes of glory shall afford.

2. Mercy and truth on earth are met, Since our Immanuel came from heaven; By his obedience so complete,

Justice is pleas'd and peace is given.
