PREFACE.

This volume is the legitimate successor of The Chicago Medical Register and Directory, issued as a private enterprise in 1872 by Drs. T. D. FITCH and NORMAN BRIDGE, and again published in 1874 under the auspices of the Chicago MedicoHistorical Society, with A. R. JACKSON, M. D., as Editor.

The aim in this issue has been to represent the interests of the medical profession of the entire State more fully than was attempted in previous editions, its character and scope being determined by the following resolution of the Illinois State Medical Society, passed at its twenty-seventh annual meeting, held in Chicago, May 15–17, 1877:

WHEREAS, At the twentieth Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association, it was resolved "That each State Medical Society be requested to prepare an Annual Register of all regular practitioners of medicine in their respective States, giving the names of the Medical Colleges in which they may have graduated, and date of diploma or license;" and

WHEREAS, The objects of the Chicago Medico-Historical Society are "to discover, procure and preserve whatever may relate to the Medical History of Chicago and vicinity, and the publication of such information as may be, from time to time, determined upon;" and inasmuch as said society has heretofore published a Medical Register of the State of Illinois, and does now publish an Annual Medical Register of the City of Chicago: therefore,

Resolved, That the Chicago Medico-Historical Society be hereby requested and authorized to publish an Annual Medical Register of the State of Illinois, in pursuance of the above resolution of the American Medical Association, together with such other matter pertaining to the medical interests of the State as may be deemed proper; and that the officers of this society be instructed, and the officers of all local societies represented in this society be requested, to furnish

lists of names and such other information as will assist the Editor and Publication Committee of the Medico-Historical Society in preparing an accurate and complete Register.

As the list of names of the regular practitioners of the State is thus directed to be made a prominent feature of the REGISTER, no effort has been spared, or resource neglected, in the endeavor to make it full and accurate.

In compiling such a list, the omission of worthy names and the admission of unworthy ones, are defects always unavoidable, but especially so in a first attempt, as this is, and when the time is limited and the information has to be obtained chiefly through correspondence.

Any farther delay, for the purpose of making additions to the list, would be unjust to the subscribers and defer the publication beyond a reasonable time; but it is hoped the additional value secured by the delay already made will be sufficient compensation for the disappointment in not receiving the book when promised.

It should be stated that the Medico-Historical Society is responsible for the names in the list of Chicago Physicians, while the Editor and Publication Committee only can be held accountable for the character of the other list. The latter, however, was submitted to the judgment of Dr. N. S. DAVIS, Secretary of the Illinois State Medical Society, who kindly rendered such assistance as was desired.

Believing that the interest already shown by the profession in the success of the undertaking, and the generally prompt response made to inquiries for names and information, as well. as the generous patronage by advance subscriptions, are evidences of confidence in its management, and of an existing necessity, the effort will be made to continue it as an annual publication.

In order to make the REGISTER the most useful and interesting to the profession, co-operation is earnestly solicited. Criticisms and suggestions, for the purpose of improving the next edition, will be kindly received. When errors observed, they should be communicated at once. The Editor should be notified of removals, deaths, changes in Societies,

are

and of anything concerning the medical interests of the State or any locality, at the time of their occurrence.

The acknowledgements of the Editor are due to the members of the Publication Committee for advice and assistance; to Mr. O. R. BROUSE, for the very full and valuable Digest of Laws furnished; to Dr. O. C. DEWOLF, Health Commissioner, for assistance rendered in preparing the Abstract of Chicago Sanitary Ordinances and Regulations; to Dr. J. H. RAUCH, President of the State Board of Health, for information received; to Mr. F. W. CRAM, for aid in collecting and preparing matter for copy; to the Secretaries of Societies, and all those who have manifested interest in the success of the work by furnishing information regarding Societies and Institutions, and names of Towns or Counties; and especially to Mr. W. T. KEENER, the obliging Publisher, whose extensive acquaintance with the profession throughout the State has been of great value in the preparation of the book.
