north-east and south-east sides there is an impenetrable jungle of trees and thorny underwood.

On all sides there is a breast-work outside the ditch with flanking rifle-pits and a thorny abbattis in front; on the west there are two lines of this abbattis about 15 feet apart, and very thick at the north-west angle; outside the tank, there is an ingeniously contrived labyrinth of entrenchments, screened from view at a distance, a part of which enfilade the approach to the gateway. There is only one entrance to the place. The west front of the fort is comparatively open, and a view of portion of the south-west bastion, and a small part of the curtain can be obtained at the distance of 400 yards; the remainder of the place is concealed by trees. The abbattis forms the greatest obstacle to an attacking column, as the stormers would be delayed by it many minutes, exposed to a close fire from the body of the place and outworks. R.
