This is an informal conference which has been arranged in accordance with my resquest to Senators McCarthy, Flanders, and Wagner in order to prepare the way for formal hearings of the Joint Committee on Housing that should begin early in October, as early as we can arrange them. As soon as I learned that Senator Sparkman, a member of the committee, was in the city, I invited him to attend and he will be here in a few minutes. Senator Flanders, Senator McCarthy has been detained by a train wreck at New Haven, and will be here later. It is expected that hearings will be held later at various cities over the country with a view to providing the maximum possible opportunity for considering the ideas and suggestions of persons and organizations interested. The conference today continues the work begun by Senator McCarthy last week for the purpose of contacting Federal departments concerned with housing. Naturally, everyone could not be invited today. If it appears that any are missing, it is only because of the limitations of time. We expect to confer with all of the principal officials related to this subject in due course. 1 |
