NOTICE.

As some persons, who have read the first Edition of this work, may be desirous to know what has been added to the second Edition, the following general statement is here given.

The hurricane encountered by H.M.S. Racer in 1837, will be found detailed at the end of Chapter V.; and the storm met with by the Spanish fleet, under Admiral Solano, in 1780, will be found described at the end of Chapter VIII. These two storms serve to explain the winds called, by the Mexican-Spaniards, Los Nortes.

In Chapter VII. some additions have been made to the explanation of the storm encountered by H.M.S. Raleigh.

In Chapter VIII. I have inserted an extract from the very interesting letter of Lieut. Archer, first lieutenant of the Phoenix, lost in one of the storms of 1780. This letter bears so directly on the subject, it here well deserves a place.
