Notes.-1. The act by which the code of 1887 was adopted provides that copies of the code published as required by said act "shall be received as evidence for any purpose for which the original act could be received and with as much effect." (Acts extra session 1887, p. 427.)

2. The same act also provides for the distribution of the code among the several public officers of the state, and by a subsequent act each officer is required to "deliver the copy held by him to the clerk of the county court of his county within thirty days from the end of his official term, and, upon his failure so to do, he shall be subject to a fine of not more than ten dollars, which may be imposed by the county court on a rule to show cause." (Acts 1893-'94, p. 745.)

3. The various sections of the code are to be construed together as one act. (Gaines' Admr. vs. Marye, Auditor, 3 Va. L. R. 447.)

Sec. 5, SUB-DIVISION SECOND. "Governor,” “justice,” “notary.”The words "the governor" shall be equivalent to the executive power of the commonwealth " or to the person having the executive power." The words "justice" or "justices" shall be construed as if the words "of the peace" followed them, and the word “notary " or "notaries" as if followed by the word " public." The words "justice" and "justice of the peace," whether used in the singular or plural, shall include any officer or officers who shall possess the jurisdiction and exercise the powers and authority of a justice of the peace in criminal matters.

CHAPTER III.

OF THE TERRITORIAL LIMITS OF VIRGINIA, AND NATURE OF THE
COMPACTS WITH ADJOINING STATES.

Sec. 13 a. To provide reciprocal rights and powers between the states of Maryland and Virginia.—It shall be lawful when the laws of Virginia, in the opinion of the legally constituted authorities of Virginia, are violated by citizens of Maryland in the waters of Virginia, and when the laws of Maryland, in the opinion of the legally constituted authorities of Maryland, are violated by citizens of Virginia in the waters of Maryland, that the offender can be pursued by the legally constituted authorities of said state where the offence was committed up to and across the boundary line between said states into the waters of said state where the offender resides, to a distance not exceeding ten miles, and if a capture is made in the continuous pursuit, the offender, vessel, and property shall be taken to the state where the offence was committed, to be dealt with under the laws of said state. This act shall be in force from the passage of a similar act by the general assembly of Maryland.

APPORTIONMENT OF REPRESENTATION.

Sec. 50. Representation in Congress; apportionment therefor.- As Amended The counties of Accomac, Northampton, Lancaster, Richmond, Northum- 1891-2, p. 348. berland, Westmoreland, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mathews, Essex, King and Queen, Caroline, Spotsylvania, and the city of Fredericksburg shall form the first congressional district.

The cities of Norfolk, Williamsburg, and Portsmouth, and the counties of Princess Anne, Norfolk, Nansemond, Isle of Wight, Southampton, Elizabeth City, Warwick, York, James City, Charles City, and Surry shall form the second congressional district.

The cities of Richmond and Manchester, and the counties of Henrico, Goochland, Chesterfield, New Kent, Hanover, and King William shall form the third congressional district.

The city of Petersburg and the counties of Prince George, Sussex, Dinwiddie, Greenesville, Brunswick, Mecklenburg, Lunenburg, Nottoway. Amelia, Powhatan, and Prince Edward shall form the fourth congressional district.

The city of Danville, the town of North Danville, and the counties of Pittsylvania, Franklin, Floyd, Henry, Patrick, Carroll, and Grayson shall form the fifth congressional district.

The cities of Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Radford, and the counties of Montgomery, Bedford, Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, and Roanoke shall form the sixth congressional district.

The cities of Winchester and Charlottesville, and the counties of Frederick, Clarke, Warren, Rappahannock, Madison, Greene, Albemarle, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Page shall form the seventh congressional district.

The city of Alexandria and the counties of Loudoun, Fairfax, Alexandria, Fauquier, Culpeper, Orange, Louisa, King George, Stafford, and Prince William shall form the eighth congressional district.

The counties of Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan, Russell, Washington, Smyth, Bland, Tazewell, Wythe, Pulaski, Giles, Craig, and the city of Bristol shall form the ninth congressional district.
