HYMN 112. L. M.

DAILY sins, and cares, and strife,
While the Lord prolongs our breath,
Make it but a dying life,

Or a kind of living death.
Wretched they, and most forlorn,
Who no better portion know:
Better never to be born,

Than to have our all below.

Happy souls, who love the Lord,
Time is not too swift for you ;
When your Saviour speaks the word,
Glad you'll bid the world adieu !
Then he'll wipe away your tears,
Near himself appoint your place;
Swiftly fly, ye rolling years;
Lord, we long to see thy face.

HYMN 113. L. M.

WHERE high the heavenly temple stands,
The house of God not made with hands,
A great High Priest our nature wears,
And firm in our behalf appears.

Tho' now ascended up on high,
He bends on earth a brother's eye:
Partaker of the human name,
He knows the frailty of our frame.
The Man of sorrows yet retains
A fellow feeling of our pains;
And still remembers in the skies,
His burning tears, and dying cries!

With boldness therefore at the throne
Let us make all our sorrows known;
And ask the blessing of his power,
To help us in the evil hour.

HYMN 114. C. M.

How precious is the Book divine,
By inspiration given;
Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heaven.

It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts,
In this dark vale of tears;
Life, light, and joy it still imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

This lamp, thro' all the tedious night
Of life shall guide our way;
Till we behold the clearer light
Of everlasting day.

HYMN 115. C. M.

VAIN man, thy fond pursuits forbear

Repent thy end is nigh:

Death at the furthest can't be far,
Oh, think, before thou die !

;

Reflect;-thou hast a soul to save! Thy sins, how high they mount! What are thy hopes beyond the grave, How stands that dark account?

O Saviour, may we never rest

Till thou art formed within ;

Till thou hast calmed the troubled breast, And crushed the power of sin.

HYMN 116. P. M.

COME on, my partners in distress,
My comrades through the wilderness,
Who still your burdens feel;
Awhile forget your griefs, and fears,
And look beyond this vale of tears
To that celestial hill.

Beyond the bounds of time and space,
Let us behold that heav'nly place,
The saints' secure abode;

On faith's strong eagle pinions rise,
And force our passage to the skies,
And scale the mount of God.
We suffer with our Master here;
We shall before his face appear,
And by his side sit down;
To patient faith the prize is sure,
And all, that to the end endure

The cross-shall wear the crown.

HYMN 117. L. M.

WHY droops my soul, with grief opprest?
Whence these despondings in my breast?
Is there no balm to heal my wound-
No kind physician to be found?

Raise to the cross thy tearful eyes;
Behold the Prince of Glory dies!
There view his stripes upon the tree,
Of all my griefs the remedy.
'His love will draw the poison'd dart,
And bind, and heal the wounded heart;
With glowing health my soul adorn,
And change the gloom of death to morn.

[blocks in formation]

WHEN sins and fears prevailing rise,
And fainting hope almost expires,
Jesus, to thee I lift my eyes,

To thee I breathe my soul's desires.
Art thou not mine, my living Lord?
And can my hopes or comforts die,
Fix'd on thine everlasting word,

The word, which founded earth and sky? If my immortal Saviour lives,

Then my immortal life is sure:
His word a firm foundation gives;
I'll build on that, and rest secure.

HYMN 119. L. M.

AT every motion of our breath
Life trembles on the brink of death;
A taper's flame, that upward turns,
While downward to the dust it burns.

"Twixt time long fled, which gave us light,
And time which soon shall end in night,
There is a point no eye can see,
Yet on it hangs Eternity!

This is that moment !-who can say
Whether it leads to night or day?
This is that moment!- -as we choose,
Th' immortal soul we save or lose!
Time past, and time to come, are not;
Time present is our only lot:

O God, henceforth our hearts incline
To seek no other love but thine.

HYMN 120. L. M.

BLEST be thy glorious Word, O God,
'Tis for our light and guidance giv'n,
It sheds a lustre all abroad,

And points the path to peace and heav'n.
Its promises rejoice our hearts,
Its doctrines are divinely true,
Knowledge and pleasure it imparts,
It comforts and instructs us too.
May we, who hear and read thy word,
Digest its truths, and feel their power;
With thankful hearts thy grace record,
And love and serve thee more and more.

HYMN 121. L. M.

"IT is the Lord"-behold his hand
Outstretched with an afflictive rod!
And hark, a voice goes thro' the land,
"Be still, and know that I am God."
O let us throng around his seat,

And let us touch the holy place;
Prostrate our spirits at his feet,

Confess our sins and sue for grace. Yes, God will hear, for Jesus pleads; Let heav'n and earth such love record; For us, for us he intercedes,

Our help is nigh-" It is the Lord."

HYMN 122. L. M.

O DRAW me, Saviour, after thee,
So shall I run, and never tire;
With gracious words still comfort me,
Be thou my hope, my sole desire.
