HYMN 133. s. M.

WE mourn for those, who sin,
Bound in the tempter's snare,
Whom guilty pleasures beckon in
To prisons of despair!

Whose hearts, by passions torn,

Are wrecked on folly's shore:—
But why in sorrow should we mourn
For those who sin no more?

We mourn for those who weep,
Whom stern afflictions bend
With anguish o'er the lowly sleep
Of parent, or of friend :—

But they, to whom the sway

Of pain and grief is o'er,

Whose tears our God hath wiped away, O, mourn for them no more.

HYMN 134. S. M.

"TIS God the Spirit leads

In paths before unknown,
The work to be perform'd is ours,
The strength is all his own.

Assisted by his grace,

We still pursue our way,

And hope at last to reach the prize,
Secure in endless day.

'Tis he, that works to will,

"Tis he, that works to do;

His is the power by which we act,
His be the glory too.

HYMN 135. C. M.

SING, ye redeemed of the Lord,
Your great Deliverer sing;
Pilgrims, for Zion's city bound,
Be joyful in your King.

See the fair way his hand hath made,
How peaceful and how plain !
The simplest trav'ller shall not err,
Nor seek the road in vain.

The hand divine shall lead us on
Along the blissful road,
Till to the sacred mount we rise,
And city of our God.

HYMN 136. L. M.

WHILE with ceaseless course the sun Hasted through the former year, Many souls their race have run, Never more to meet us here!

Fixed in an eternal state,

They have done with all below; We a little longer wait,

But how little, none can know !
O how swift our fleeting days
Bear us down life's rapid stream!
Upwards, Lord, our spirits raise;
All below is but a dream.

Thanks for mercies past receive;
Pardon of our sins renew;
Teach us henceforth how to live
With eternity in view.

HYMN 137. L. M.

COME, gracious Spirit, from above,
Author of light, and Source of love,
Be thou our Guardian, thou our Guide,
O'er every thought, and step, preside.
Lead us to Christ, the living way,
Nor leave us e'er again to stray;
Lead us to holiness, the road

Which we must take to dwell with God.

Lead us to God, our final rest,

To be with him for ever blest;
Lead us to heav'n, that we may share
Angelic bliss for ever there.

HYMN 138. L. M.

LORD, I despair myself to heal,
I see my sin, but cannot feel:
I cannot, till that grace I know,
Which bids the warm affections flow.
'Tis thine a heart of flesh to give,
I only ask, and then receive:
To thee I would my will resign,
To draw, support, and seal, are thine.
Speak, gracious Lord, my weakness cure,
Make my unsteady nature sure;

Peace, righteousness, and joy impart,
And pour thy grace

into my

heart.

HYMN 139. S. M.

FATHER, in whom we live,

In whom we are, and move,

The glory and the praise receive
Of thy creating love.

Incarnate Deity,

Let all the ransom'd race
Render in thanks their lives to thee
For thy redeeming grace.
That grace, to sinners shewn,
Ye heav'nly choirs proclaim,
"Salvation to our God,

And cry,

Salvation to the Lamb."

[blocks in formation]

LORD God, the Holy Ghost,
In this accepted hour,
Now on thy day of Pentecost,
Descend in all thy power.

Thy suppliants inspire

With wisdom from above;

And give us hearts and tongues of fire To pray, and praise, and love.

Spirit of Light, explore

And chase our gloom away, With lustre shining more and more Unto the perfect day.

Spirit of Truth, be thou

In life and death our Guide ;O Spirit of Adoption,-now May we be sanctified.

HYMN 141. C. M.

FAITH adds new joy to earthly bliss,
And saves us from its snares;
Fresh aid in every duty brings,
And softens all our cares.

Faith mortifies the love of sin,
Kindles the sacred fire

Of love to God and heavenly things,
And feeds the pure desire.

Faith draws aside the vail of heav'n,
Where unknown glories reign;
And bids us seek our portion there,
Nor bids us seek in vain.

Faith holds to view the promise, seal'd
With the Redeemer's blood;
And helps our feeble hope to rest
Upon a faithful God.

HYMN 142. C. M.

WHEN all thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view, I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise.

Ten thousand thousand precious gifts
My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart,
That tastes those gifts with joy.

When worn with sickness, oft hast thou
With health renewed my face;
And when in sin and sorrow sunk,
Reviv'd my soul with grace.

Thro' every period of my life

Thy goodness I'll pursue:
And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.
